Minimum Requirements for ASG running on ESXi

Hello All,

But I am a little bit confused because when I have a look at the astaro website and the requirements are different between the virtual appliance and the software appliance.

I want to install ASG (latest_asg_v8_software.iso) on my ESXi server and not the virtual image.

What kind of linux? Maybe I would prefer 64-bit.

What do you recommend?

having run esxi more than a couple of times here's my advice:
Other 2.6x Kernel Linux 64-bit...use the 64 bit..if you have to upgrade beyond 3 gig you won't have to reinstall later.
Ram: minimum is 2 gigs..best to start with that amount.
cpu two with at least 2.0 ghz allocated.  
hard drive 40 gigs minimum.
nic e1000 all the way..can't beat the intels.

If you have further questions let me know...however...you should be able to use the vmware image for astaro then modify it's allocations before you light it off..[:)]

I've been running ESXi 4.1 at home up until earlier this week when I upgraded to ESXi 5.0.

Notes: (for ESXi v4.1 & v5.0 on my home setup)

I prefer to do a fresh custom install using the ASG software appliance ISO.

I had some strange issues using the prefabbed ASG Virtual Appliances.  YMMV.  

Here's my setup on the system in my signature:

OS Type: "Other 2.6x Kernel Linux 32-bit"
CPU: 1 virtual cpu, 2 cores
RAM: 2GB (it's using about 25% with everything I want running)
HDD: 60GB (go ahead & allocate at least 40GB min) (I prefer 60GB & thick provisioned)
NIC: 4 Intel E1000 (I'm only using 2, but since I did a fresh install and you can't add more NICs on-the-fly w/out reinstalling ASG, go ahead and put 4 in the VM for future use).

Since ASG v8.2 has the VMWare Tools integrated, shutting down/restarting ASG from the vSphere Client is very simple (no need to log into Webadmin to restart the VM).  BTW, make sure you set ASG to auto-start when ESXi powers on (configured in vSphere Client).

I've been pleasantly surprised with how well ASG runs on vSphere EXSi.

CPU: 2 vCPU
RAM: 2GB

NIC: 4 vNic (Intel E1000), every vNic get its own vSwitch, no other VM connected to this 4 vSwitches
VM Startup 1. Order in Auto-start

If the HDD getting to small I want to expand it by using this Link expanding with gparted

Why not using the nics as Adaptertyp VMXNET3?

Really I am unsure to run a firewall von ESXi about security. 
In the www I found a lot of comments not to run a firewall on a virtual machine - but I dont find a declaration why it is too risky to run ASG on ESXi.
What can I do to hardened the system?

Is ESXi 5.0 out, because vmware anounced it for Sept.?
Is it a good idea to upgrade now or is it better to wait 2 or 3 month?
Can you give me a Link for upgrading please.

I went ahead and did the upgrade as VMWare conducted a really extensive beta and I feel they released a solid product with v5.  I prefer the e1000 NICs as I think they work better than any of VMWare's virtual NICs.

What I read in the short time it seams that the upgrade from 4.1 to 5.x not a easy way is.

Just browse your Datastore and manually copy your entire ASG folder to another computer and do a clean install of v5.0.  Then copy your ASG folder back using the datastore browser and setup a new VM using your prior VM image and vmdisk.  

That's how I did mine as I also wanted to upgrade the file format for the HDD ESXi was installed on.  A simple upgrade doesn't upgrade the disk format/structure (it still uses v3.xx).

See the link below for a better explanation of doing a clean install to get VMFS-5 (instead of VMFS-3, which will remain on your HDD if you just do an upgrade).
