APC SmartUPSs and Automatic Startup

I have 2 120s and a 220 that are all Appliances loaded with 8.103 that are plugged in to APC SmartUPS 2200s at their sites. I have read and understand that if I attach them to the UPSs via USB that they will shutdown once the UPS sends a low battery signal but what I want to know is if they will start back up once the power is restored. It seems in my experience that if the power just goes out or if they get unplugged (Oops) that they turn back on but if you issue a shutdown command unplug it and plug it back it you have to turn them on. I could be wrong that is why I want to verify. Thanks!

    Sure, that they even start up again, even if the battery of the ups isn't completly unloaded? Or can you explain how the ups is restarting the asg, when the asg has been shutdown, but the main power is restored, before the battery is discharged?

    Probably utilizing the laststate power setting in the bios, which will activate when power is restored or a custom control signal sent by the UPS, similar to a WoL "magic packet".  There's pretty good documentation on how UPSs work in the manual for an open source UPS control software package at http://www.apcupsd.org/.

    An that is exactly what i'm talking about. Does the ups cycle the asg power, if main power is restored, even if the battery is not complety discharged. Or have any config changes at the ups been necessary?

    That depends on the UPS.  There isn't any standardization and each manufacturer does things a bit differently.  That's why the UPS interface software in Astaro only supports UPSs from two manufacturers.  With APC, it will send a control signal when main power is restored.

    That is all about the settings of your UPS.  The ones I set up, when they are out of battery, the unit shuts down.  When the power comes back on, the UPS waits until a percentage of charge is built back up in the battery, then it switchs the power on to attached devices.  I'm not sure what your experience is with UPS units, but it's actually not that complicated.

    This behavior is like i expected with most ups. But only if it runs out of battery the asg will be restarted. I cannot see an restart condition if the ups doesn't run out of battery power.

    But the ASG will not shut down unless the battery is exhausted... set your UPS to restart after the mains has returned, and problem solved -- I do this all the time.

    So, the question is: Does an ASG respond to a wake-up message from an APC, or does it simply use the USB connection to know when to send alerts about power going out and the UPS running out of juice?
