ASG425 no VGA Port. What Jumper Anyone?

It must be an old v1.  Pin outs won't match with what you can find at radio shack, it's a bit more custom than that.  It should be the same connector as a v1 220, but the pinouts may or may not be the same.  See this thread for details of the pinouts for a v1 220:  https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/26391.

Just like with the early revisions of the other hardware, you're probably hardware limited to the amount of memory it can recognize due to the chipset.  The old 425's came with 2GB installed and based on what you're seeing, the max it can see is 3GB.  Keep in mind that anything over 2GB is basically a waste as 32-bit systems use anything over that amount extremely inefficiently (more system resources are used to keep track of the larger address space than you gain by having the additional RAM on a sliding scale).

Hopefully you didn't pay more than a few hundred bucks for it, because you can build a top of the line atom box for around $400-$500 with more processing power, a full 4GB RAM, 64-bit, and less power usage than a v1 425 (although with only half the network ports).

You can install the hardware version and delete the asg file on the harddrive and it will then accept the home license (the front lcd will probably work as well).

That was a helpful link but still not too sure if 220 board config is the same as 425? It appears someone had made a cable for the 425. I already have the VGA adapter from radio shack.

I may as well just yank the hd and install it in my Local computer as Primary HD then install software ISO on it. It would be faster short term but I'm sure I will need to do this a few times.

For my home use this is good enough for my family except the 100 watts running is more than I like. 30 cents per Kwh for NYC is insane.

I agree Atom is next one on my list however my home camera system Sony network cameras SNZ eat up almost half the Nic cards. I think 8 might just do it for my home. At work I'm at 8 nics and growing. You can never have too many nics. [:)]

Got it on ebay for a deal; however time factor and all those nics cards 1000/100/10 which was a deciding factor. Plus, I know the Astaro Box works very well. I'm very happy with my Asatro boxes.

I already replaced ram with energy efficient ram at faster bus speed. My next stop is to swap out the CPU chip with a lesser speed cpu which is still more than I need.

I figure I can get it to around 80 watts which will do fine in my house of energy waste.

(80 watts X 24 hours)(30)=57.6kwh (12) = 691.2($210 year at 30 cents kwh.) About $150 more than Atom.

For 200 bucks I'll take it for 1 year or so. 

In NYC if you cutback on electric they just raise the rates, Use less water they charge even more. Can't win either way.

There should only be one 16 pin header on the motherboard.

Im going to try that when I get the part online in a few days. I'll post when done.

However, I will try to delete the asg dir first to see if the software license will load. If so then I will get my LCD working on my 525 also by this method.

New Problem: Allow Root Login:
You can allow SSH access for the root user. This option is disabled by default as it leads to a higher security risk. When this option is enabled, the root user is able to login via their public key. Upload the public key(s) for the root user into the field Authorized Keys For Root.

every single time I add both local and public keys and save it reverts back to No shell access?

Any ideas for shell access. I am able to see the login and password but cant get in.

I haven't used keys for remote shell access, but from what I gather you should only be uploading the public key and the keys have to be RSA.  Do either of these tidbits help?

This is one of those areas where the documentation is absolutely worthless and makes an assumption that people automatically know this process through the miracle of osmosis.

As a test, I just generated a public key using puttygen (on windows) and was able to cut/paste it into the authorized keys area.  I didn't take it any further though.

If just using password, you can login as loginuser, then su to gain root.

haha my key is only half that bit 1024 ?  Do I have to format this since dns flush wont take?


I wonder is it possible that this box needs to get updated from the ISO. My box has no internet connection whatso ever. 

I wonder if this is causing this.

A simple task no so simple. 

I created my name as admin local and created another name admin remote. tried both. I wont uses these keys again anyway.

I just went through the whole process including connecting through putty and it worked fine.  Here's the steps I took.

1)  In Puttygen, I generated a key pair- ssh-2 RSA 1024 bit.  Added the passphrase and saved the private key file.
2)  Copied the Public Key.
3)  In WebAdmin>>Management>>System Settings>>Shell Access, I enabled public key authentication and root access but only with ssh key.  Added an entry (plus sign) to authorized keys, using the public key which I copied earlier, for both loginuser and root (just for testing purposes).  Hit apply.
4)  In putty went to Connection>>SSH>>Auth and browsed to the private key file I had saved earlier.
5)  Opened connection in Putty.  Was prompted for "login as" and entered root.  Prompted for my passphrase and entered it.  Given bash shell prompt.

There are only two accounts that have permission to the bash shell in Astaro.....loginuser and root.  That's it.  No others can be used.  When you're prompted for "login as" in putty, those two listed above are your only choices.  Accounts created in WebAdmin (including the default admin account) only have access to WebAdmin.

I would like to thank dilandau for his keen finding of "Blind install" or how to get a software ISO without actually installing the software ISO. I'm sure this will be huge with anyone that owns an Astaro/ Sophos ASG product. What a time saver WOW!
From now on just load the hardware ISO and then delete the asg file under etc directory. Simple 123 and fast. Thank you all.

Now you are guaranteed to have the right eth0-eth10 match up...something that was inpossible with the software iso. 

And finally thank you Scott for point out to me when SSHing there is no such user other than "root" as the login name. I was trying to use my admin name to no avail.
