MD RAID1 Kernel Modules

It's been made clear in posts here over the last few years by Astaro that you can use hardware RAID, but adding software RAID is impractical/impossible.

Well that is a bummer. With the modules it would be very straight forward for me to setup the software raid.

I don't need failure management or rollover. I just want a mirror that I can swap around when there is a failure.

If you did it, you'd have to disable all updates to the software as most likely would blow up your custom work.  If you want to read the comments on here, google

Impractical/Impossible? I cannot possibly imagine how it would be either. The MD toolset is a Linux stable and is mature in the kernel so I call BS. I would think Astaro does not want to do it to put their own line of hardware in a better light (as you get a supported RAID solution with their own monitor).

Well, this has been the case with Astaro since long before they began offering appliances.  So far, no one has found a solution that survives Up2Dates.  If you can find a way, that would be appreciated by a lot of people here, including me!

Right, which goes back to Astaro seemingly not wanting to do it. I'm just not sure why - It would add value to their rather uninspiring appliances and would, similarly, add value to folks using their own gear.

You might check feature.astaro.com to see if this has been suggested there.

I actually added my $0.02 to this feature request 7 months ago. It doesn't appear to be very popular, however.

I still like the idea, but I have other peeves that are bigger issues for me.  I just posted a comment there:

Outside of losing some logs and reports, the only additional downtime is the time it takes to copy a backup to a USB memory stick.

Assume that you have a second drive installed and that whenever you finish applying an Astaro Up2Date to the primary drive, you manually mirror it to your second drive.  Also, you have configuration backups emailed to you every day.

When the first drive dies, put the most-recent configuration backup in the root of a USB memory stick.  Switch the PC to boot from the second drive, insert the memory stick and boot.

I realize that that takes some extra effort after each Up2Date, but, with RAID adapters under $50, it's harder than ever to justify spending developer time when anyone needing RAID can get it for a very small investment.  For under $30, the little StarTech card, for example, lets you do striping and mirroring - thus giving you improved performance.  I don't know that that's compatible with Astaro though.

Actually those $30 RAID cards are largely driver supported (ie software) RAID solutions. The 'md' driver can do just as good, if not better, than these cards and with better support from the Linux kernel while doing so.

I do agree it's fairly easy to restore the firewall, but being easy and being preventable are two different things. Restores also have to be done on-site, something that can further increase restoration times.

There is also the issue of knowing when there is an impending drive failure. If the system starts to get seek errors on writes, does Astaro send out notices, for instance? If not, then the need for being able to monitor disk health becomes very important still. The Linux MD suite supports monitoring, as do hardware RAID controllers. Support for either is lacking with Astaro and that, to me, is a fairly big gap.

For a home firewall sure these things might not be significant for businesses, I still consider this almost a blunder on Astaro's part. Wrapping a pretty GUI around the MD suite I would doubt is difficult to do as the suite itself is feature-rich and extremely useful in it of itself.
