Should I upgrade to v8?

Hi guys,

I am using a second hand ASG 110/120 rev 3 at home with a home user license and currently its running the latest version of 7.x.  So I'm wondering there will be any issues if I go ahead and install the software version on my ASG 110/120 and if version is as stable as it should be?

Any input would be very much appreciated.

    Hi, the NICs might get renumbered... there are some other threads about upgrading from 7.x -> 8.x

    Also, you should have at least 1GB RAM.

    Thanks for the reply Barry, my ASG 110/120 is showing 995.1 MB RAM in the dashboard so I guess it does have 1GB in total but I'm not sure why it's not showing the full 1 GB, any ideas?

    Probably is sharing a little RAM with the video card.

    I have been reading these forums about peoples experiences upgrading to v8.x, and I'm wondering if just under 1GB RAM is really enough for v8, what do you think?  Also some people are saying that a rev 3 unit will get the 64bit version of ASG 8.x and that needs slightly more RAM.  I have checked mine and its currently running 32bit version of ASG 7.510...  So I am a bit worried that my unit will not be up to the job of v8 but I can't find anything conclusive one way or the other.

    Do you have any ideas or does anyone else?

    What features are you using, how many users, bandwidth, and how much is your current RAM usage?

    My system is running around 400MB RAM used, but I don't use the proxies or A/V.

    I am using it at home, so we have 2 PCs, iPhones, iPad, xbox, Apple TV that kind of thing.  I use Web Security and firewall mainly and my current RAM usage is 43%..

    Out of curiosity if you don't use AV etc. what parts do you use?

    Well I have taken the plunge and installed v8.102 and it is up and running, otherwise I wouldn't be online writing this!

    Will see how it goes over the next few days...

    PacketFilter, IPS, QOS, VPNs, VLANs, SOCKS proxy.

    There are some with the opinion that 1GB is not enough for V8. However it runs perfectly fine, and with easily up to 15-25 users with all services running on a decent 5-10mbit line.

    The fact is, we have thousands of appliances out there in full operational mode running ASG V8 with 1GB of RAM, if it didnt work, or was performing terribly, we wouldn't offer products based like this. 

    Most support cases regarding load issues at the low end are from misconfiguration, too many users with too many services enabled beyond what is intended, or command line tweaks which impact unintended areas.
