Hardware Requirments / SSD Support?

Hey blm,

I looked over your specs. They look pretty good other than a few modifications. Please see below.

Chassis Supermicro CSE-513L-260B (schwarz) - Good, yet with the 5k fan, it will be loud. If it is in the basement, not so much a factor.
Mainboard Supermicro X7SPE-H-D525 - Good Board. Great use of heatsinks, reputable company and great Intel NIC's.
2.5" Hard Drive Mounting Kit Supermicro CSE-PT73
Risercard Supermicro RSC-RR1U-E16
Memory Supermicro Kingston ValueRAM, 2 GB, DDR3-1066, CL7, SODIMM - I would bump this to 4GB. The internal Proxy filter cache does take a bit more memory to run without swap. I get 1-2% swap engaged on my Atom 330 w/ 2GB.
Disc OCZ OCZ SSD Vertex 2 Extended Cap. 60GB, SATA-II, 2,5 Zoll, MLC - I have confirmed that SSD's are nice with ASG boxes. It helps with logging / reporting / user interface / booting. IMHO I would go with the Kingston V100 series though. They support TRIM and I have found their support to be second to none.
NIC HP HP NC7170 Dual Port PCI-X Gigabit Server Adapter (available already) - Big problem! This is a PCI-X NIC. You are using PCI-E / Express. The board is a PCI-E x4 connection in a PCI-E x16 slot. I would go with an Intel Dual-Port PCI-E NIC like this Newegg.com - Intel EXPI9402PTBLK 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express Two Gigabit Copper Server Connections 2 x RJ45 - Network Interface Cards

Some points I observed during my process were:
1. The SSD is a benefit and their cost has come down to an affordable level which makes them a good decision in regards to cost / benefit analysis.
2. The Atom D510 & D525 with their Dual core / HT / DMI / Integrated memory controller / 4GB MAX RAM interface takes them into a whole different class than the ATOM 330. I have used both. I also have a Core i3 in service. I have not seen any difference in performance between the Core i3 and Atom D525 yet.

As BarryG stated, you can create internal IPS exclusions to get the performance even higher on LAN. You may also want to set the IDS/IPS signatures to only look for services you are actually using on your network. The biggest factors I have found in creating a high throughput system is plenty of RAM and good NIC's.

fwiw, for an Atom CPU, the case fan could be replaced with a much slower one.

Also note that some fanless mini-ITX cases exist (see my signature below for one example)... I don't see many fanless flexATX cases though (google shows one mentioned in 2007).

How did that XMBD-7SPE-H-D525-O base system work out for you.

I have been eyeing that motherboard for an Astaro box to replace my current setup using an old power hungry 3.6 GHz P4 I had laying around.  I figure the power savings will pay for the upgrade in a year or so.

The board is working as expected. All hardware is recognized and I was able to create a LAG with different VLAN's. As I have received the components only view days ago I can't tell anythin about performance. While setting the firewall up, I'm running some king of parallel operation between the "old" firewall and the new ASG. So far I'm happy with it.

As soon as I have some more experiance (everything up and running) I'll post a full review.
