Hardware Requirments / SSD Support?

ssd is not going to give you any speed increase except for booting.  go with a regular hdd and save the $$$.  I don't know what cpu you are going ot use but even a dual core atom would be enough for what you are doing..[:)]  You aren't going to see 1GB throughput because your dsl is 20 mbit at the fastest..so FE will suffice.  The only questionable hardware is the nic.  as far as the mobo Astaor works on quite a bit of hardware that's not "officially" supported.

As far as I know ASG does support Trim as of V8 – right?

As of ASG v8.1 it appears from running 'uname -a' in an SSH session that Astaro runs on Linux kernel 2.6.32, and if this article is anything to go by Astaro should have a recent enough kernel to support the TRIM command (look for the heading 'Disk improvements').  However William has a good point, you'll probably only see an increase in boot speed, there isn't really anything about ASG that requires storage throughput to be that fast.

I use an mtron 64gb 3.5" form factor SATA SSD in my Astaro. The PC is a lenovo M8910amu with 4gb of ram(upgradeable to 8gb), and Intel core2 duo 2.93 gb processor. There are two Intel Gigabit ethernet adapters installed, one captive to the mother board and one PCIe add on adapter. As a recomendation I would steer clear of any SSD which is using MLC. Although the SLC type drive is somewhat more expensive, you will not encounter slow down associated with the MLC type drives. The bottleneck tends to be the onboard controller, and removal(fulshing) of deleted data. I have 35/35 symetrical FIOS, and although the current configuration my be larger than necessary I am very pleased with the performance. This box with the SSD installed is almost silent, and runs 24x7x365. my workstation hard drive make more noise than the Astaro box, both are about 10 months old. The last reboot was 33 days ago when the electric meter was replaced. There are others who post on the fourm who also have an Mtron drive installed on their Astaro. There are pros and cons to both standard or SSD drives. I encourage you to research both carefully. I elected to use an SSD for noise reasons primarily. While under load the SSD can create an electrical load close to or exceeding standard hard drive. Outside of logging and up2date there is not much drive activity so there is a savings on power usage. The PC is always cold to the touch as is the processor heatsink and the SSD. Here is a link to the Mtron products page. Hopefully my comments have helped you in your SSD quest!

One question. Will the you case be a 1U configuration? If so the box will be very noisy. I have a Super Micro Atom 330 dual core server which is very noisy due to the 1U build. If it is going in a server room you may not notice the noise. However in the same room a 1U will be loud!

actually the cheap mlc drives do suck.  mlc drives from real ssd vendors don't suck as they use good controllers with built in garbage collection.  Modern oses also support trim which keeps ssd's cleaned up.  OCA/Intel are the two best mlc/slc vendors.  You don't need slc with astaro and only in the largest scenarios is even an mlc really justified.

1u is not necessarily loud.  It depends on how it's built.  if you are using an atom you don't really need 5 small 7k fans.  you can disable most of them OR make sure you sue a bios that can have those fans go to really slow then they aren't that loud..[:)]

It was the powersupply fan that was making all of the noise. Although the BIOS allows for fan speed configuration the power supply fan was not included in the configuration. The result being that the Atom was down graded to a test server and I added the Lenovo in it's place. I am much happier with the Lenovo. When running on demand video, a couple of VPN sessions to work, and some web activity on one of the other boxes the Atom could not keep up with the load. This was exhibited by pixilated video. The upgrade fixed that issue. Although the Lenovo is over kill, I can run concurrent HD on demand video from all three TV's multiple VPN sessions and still have not saturated the available resources.

@William, I would require Gb Speed as I have multiple VLAN's (parents, kids, server,...) and I would like to have max performance from and to the server VLAN but still would like to benefit from a firewall in between. I don't care so much about the WAN performance - therefore the configuration should be sufficient. 

Does anybody have experiance with Atom (D525, 1.8GHz) processors and firewalled LAN bandwidth (config and requirements see at the beginning of this thread)?

@scottj, the 1U case would be in a "server room" (basement). So I don't really care about noisy cases. Unfortunately I do care about power consumption and heat absorption (BTU's).

As I understand Astaro will introduce in Q2 2011 a new version 8.200 with lots of new features, allowing up to layer 7 deep packet inspection (NGFW). What are your thoughts in terms of performance with my below configuration and requirements?
Also, would SSD don’t bring any advantage for this new release? May someone next to Astaro could answer to this question as well?

Again any comments, hints and thoughts are very welcome….

if you are looking to really inspect things..and want max throughput the atom isn't going to cut it.  you'll have to sacrifice power for the throughput your after with the features you want to use. Go with a fast dual core cpu in the core ix series.  Also go with intel nics.  They'll just work.  Make sure you sue pci-e nics as the pci bus doesn't have dedicated gigabit bandwidth.

I have a SuperMicro Dual core Atom box in my living room and it has a low whine from the PSU fans but that's it.  If you think that's loud, you have sensitive ears.  1U servers usually sound like a vacuum cleaner running 24/7.
