ASG 120 - realworld capabilities?

2 gigs is really the minimum.  I would NOT buy a 120.  It won't handle as much as the current machine will if you go full guard.  I would most assuredly go two gigs of ram.  If you can go for a faster DC cpu if you start hammering the BE's now.  being as it's a socket AM@ system there are plenty of cpu upgrades still available.  Check your mobo manf website for cpu compatibility.  YOu can get FG with the ASG software package.  I would stay with your current hardware and upgrade as needed.  if you want to go rackmount then maybe one of the asg units is for you but you are going to need a 2xx unit at the minimum..so settle for the atoms type cpu's in the 1xx series..[:)]  I would actually consider hitting the dell outlet(or choose your server vendor) and find a refurb rackmount.  You can find something that will run circles around the 1xx or even 2xx units for a very reasonable price.

I have to agree with some of what William said but not all of it.

He is right that for a 25 user office, if you were to turn on all the features of the Full Guard subscription you would strain the 120, if not bring it to it's knees. [:)] That said for just web & email filtering, the current generation of ASG120 is sufficient for a 25 user office.

The question though is what sort of traffic do you need to protect? Is the office a retail operation which is heavily biased towards web & email traffic? Do you host services in house like email & web servers you need to protect. How many satellite offices, if any, do you need to tie back to this office? How much do you expect your operation to grow by?

For our operations, the ASG120 w/ web & network security was enough. We have 25-30 active users in each office at any given time. Our traffic is primarily web & email with some misc backup server traffic at night.

We'd considered the ASG220 and software subscriptions for these offices. Software was ditched because we could purchase redundant 220's for less then what the combined hardware/software costs would've been for a software subscription.

The final decision between the 120 & 220 came down to a discussion with Astaro's sales team and one of their engineers. We were assured the 120's would handle the load we anticipated and having had them in service for several months now, they have performed better then expected.

It depends on where you source your hardware and the discounts you can get form Astaro.  You can EASILY get a server that'll run circles around even a 1xx and sometimes a 2xx for less than $300 from the dell outlet if you hit it at the right times.  I've never been able to get a cheaper price on hardware from Astaro against the dell outlet(or similar manf areas).  These are machines with full warranties as well..[:)]

While you may be saving a bundle on the hardware and getting faster stuff, you will have to license ASG via seats then with the Software Appliance.  That drives the cost up a LOT.

Largely based on William's comments and my own intuition, I'll keep my current hardware.  I manage an ASG320 on my day job and remember how much better it performed after the 2Gb upgrade became available.  In the future, I'll do compatibility testing to see if 8.1x is supported on my motherboard.

As Rugby said, licensing the software by the seat adds up.  It would be nice if Astaro offered CAL's, so one didn't suffer a big sticker cost, when moving from 10->25->50 IP's.

the current ASG 120 is fully capable of filtering 25 users on that connection. We sell thousands of them per quarter, and while some feel the memory in the box is low, or don't fully understand the ram usage and how it relates to swap, the specs and needs you have given are what it is designed to handle. I would encourage you to get a demo unit from us, we make it very easy to test it out and be sure it meets your expectations!
