ASG 220 rev.4 > 75% RAM usage with 8.100

Hi,

I picked up a new rev. 4 ASG 220 at a bargain price recently, and have been weighing up the possibility of using it to replace my old ASG 110 for home use.  I re-imaged the 220 yesterday with the 8.003 hardware appliance ISO and then updated it to 8.100.  With no active users, WebAdmin showed me a message that over 75% of the appliance's memory was regularly in use, and that I should consider a memory upgrade or a beefier appliance.

This unit has 1GB of RAM, and to my knowledge there are no official memory upgrade available for this device from Astaro.  This would imply that the latest ASG 220 hardware doesn't work well with the latest ASG software, which would be a strange situation to say the least.  Is this true or is there a memory upgrade I don't know about (or maybe a rev.5 hardware revision is imminent)?

I realize since I would be using a home license I'd be installing the software appliance instead, and that if I opened up the ASG I could probably increase the memory myself beyond the current 1GB.  I may also decide to put the 220 back on eBay, since I've had feedback before that I'd be better off with an Atom system or similar.  Astaro make nice hardware though, so I figured I'd ask the question anyway.

    1GB RAM is basically the minimum required for running 8.x, which is the maximum officially supported by Astaro in a 220 (rev 2+).  If you'd just be running this using the software version on the 220 and don't need to worry about support, then you can boost up the RAM.  There is an Astaro memory upgrade kit for the 320 to go from 1GB to 2GB which will work with a newer revision 220.  
     
    Do not do this if you are running the hardware version of Astaro, as it will void any support agreement you have.
     
    I would suspect that when 8.2x comes out, which will have higher RAM needs, Astaro will most likely officially support 2GB RAM for 220's and allow the purchase of the RAM upgrade kit.  This is what they did during the move to 7.x with a kit  (or hardware replacement) when official support was given for 512MB to 1GB RAM.

    I did the same thing, bought one for home use and now I have two problems

    1) Memory
    2) According to what I have read I can not use my home license :-( so I guess I will have to make my own computer.

    Some information from a business user:

    2x ASG 220 rev. 4, Hot-standby, Full Guard Licence + WAF
    about 50 Users with few load, about 1000 Mails in 24 hours

    Memory: 70-80%
    Swap: 40-60%
    CPU: 2-8% with some peeks

    So memory absolutely is an issue here. The boxes run stable and smooth but in my opinion an upgrade to 2 GB memory would be a really good thing. I don't think that the boxes could manage more load (Wireless, E-Mail-Encryption, RED, etc.) without an impact.

    I really think that Astaro should think about a memory upgrade option for the 220 boxes before the release of 8.200. Looking at some of the upcoming features I don't want to run in an heavy memory problem. I hope my (christmas) wish will be heared.

    I absolutely confirm. My ASG 220 rev.3 has a medium cpu utilization of 6-7%, the lack is RAM usage, with 2 gb it would be perfect for our organization (25 clients, 1 web server, 1 mail server).

    I have 7.508 and I will not upgrade soon. I'm seriously think to not renew the subscriptions on may (when they will expire). It's absurd that 220 that is not an entry level has the minimum memory requirement of v8. [:@]

    Who knows the differences from rev.3 to rev.4?

    I had a test appliance rev. 3 and now have rev. 4.
    If I remember correctly the differences are:
    - rev. 4 has Gigabit ports, rev. 3 only 100MBps (some or all, I don't remember)
    - rev. 4 has a better CPU (Celeron, not Pentium 4)
    - RAM should be the same size (1 GB)

    This one sounds strange...
    at least eth3 (used for HA) should be 1000mbp.

    IIRC eth0-eth3 were gigabit and eth4-eth7 were 100mps. But this was several months ago. Maybe I made a mistake here.

    We just rolled out our first ASG120 to a client and noticed the ram limitation immediately.  I'm more than a little concerned about this lack of ram.

    You can; you just need to erase the disk and install the software version of Astaro.
    You'll need a VGA cable if you don't have one already.
