Which HD controller is on the board?

The HD controller is part of the intel 3420 chipset. 

Intel® 3400 & 3420 chipsets - Overview

"Intel® 3420 chipset supports eight PCI Express x1 ports configurable as x2 and x4, six SATA 3Gb/s ports,
twelve USB 2.0 ports for I/O and Intel® Matrix Storage Technology."

The user Buxus uses an Asus P7F-C/4L, which has the same 3420 chipset. It is working with V8.
He made an entry in the unoffical HCL. I wrote him a boardmail, but unfortunately he didnt respond.

7.5 doesn't have very good SATA support; it might work if you can put the controllers in 'legacy' mode.

Perhaps you could pick up a used server on ebay or similar; I've got a couple HP models in my signature below that work great.

Thomas, if you don't have Web Security or Mail Security, there are just a few, simple changes needed to go without the SMTP and HTTP Proxies.  The only situation where there's an advantage to using a proxy is when using SMTP Profiles to route multiple domains to multiple mail servers.

Have you discussed your requirements with your reseller?  Maybe you would benefit from moving to an Astaro Appliance; some clients use a software version because they have high volumes but not that many IPs, others are better off with appliances because they have many IPs, but low overall usage.

thank you for your answer. You posted several times that you dont see any value in 
using SMPT- and HTTP-Proxy without A/V. That simply isnt true. At least not in
generall and if you try to reach a certaing level off security and compliance.

Please see the following real world example:

In generell all outgoing traffic is blocked. Only the proxies are allowed to connect to
external sites. There are only a few exceptions from this rule for well known b2b
connections.

HTTP: There is no free internet access for all employees.  So we need authentication. 

SMTP: Mail is handled via a smarthost. This host does all the SPAM and A/V scanning.
This host requires SMPT-AUTH which the customers internal groupware cant do as needed.

Upgrading to V8 and keeping SMTP-Proxy, HTTP-Proxy, VoIP-Proxy and IPsec-VPN
would raise the annual price tag by 600% for this particular customer.

We use and recommend Astaro to our customers since Version 2.x, but if the license 
thing will not change during the remaining maintenance period, we will replace it.

Thanks, Thomas, for your explanation.  Please post back here when you decide an alternative to the V8 upgrade, whether adding HTTP and SMTP proxies elsewhere or replacing the Astaro.
