Using an ASG 220 with a home license

I'm considering an ASG 220 hardware appliance as an upgrade to my current ASG 110/120 appliance, which I reformatted and set up as a software appliance so I could use it with a home license.  If I were to use the ASG ISO to similarly repurpose an ASG 220 for home use, I realize one difference from a regular hardware appliance is that the WebAdmin dashboard will not show the graphic of the appliance itself (not that big a deal).  Would another limitation be that the LCD display on the front of the ASG 220 would also be blank with the software appliance ISO installed, since this is specific to the hardware appliances?

Personally I quite like running the ASG software on Astaro hardware, since I'm pretty much guaranteed no compatibility issues and it's purpose-built for ASL.  It's a shame that home use license cannot be used with hardware appliances (I'm not sure of the reason why?), but if anyone out there is able to clarify the limitations above I'd be very grateful.

    That device seems like expensive overkill for home use.  You could always get an inexpensive dual core atom setup like a SuperMicro 1U server.  You can get them for under $400 with everything you would need.

    Yes - I'm sure an ASG 220 is overkill normally.  I picked one up on eBay recently for $450, which was bought new in July and in its original unopened box.  This seemed like a bargain, so I figured I would try it out and then relist it if I end up choosing not to use it.  Thanks for the tip on SuperMicro - I'll take a look.  Right now I have an original form factor ASG 110 with a memory upgrade to 1GB, which works fine for home use other than being a bit slow.  I'm assuming a new ASG 220 would give a significant speed boost, but I'm unsure how well it works with the software appliance install necessary for home use.

    Although a newer 220 will give you a boost CPU wise, you'll still be under the same memory limitations when using an Astaro appliance.
     
    You would be much better off using your own hardware, which will probably have an even faster CPU, where you can use as much cheap memory as you wish (within any limitations of the hardware).

    Thanks for the advice - I may just relist the 220 on eBay and then think about other options a bit more.  At the price I got it for (and as a brand new unit) it seemed too good to pass up, but I can see how I could get better performance with my own hardware.  I really don't need a rack mount appliance - my current ASG 110 is small enough to be wall-mounted, so a mini ITX system or similar may do the trick (but they tend to be more pricey from what I've seen).
