Hardware performance

it REALLY depends on how that configuration is used.

in regards to the two mahcines in my signature:

the first one servies 5 mahcines but in reality there's 2 users.  I have jsut about everything on..with no issues

Machine two has 10 machines on one network and a maximum of 10 on the other.  users average 7 but on the weekends with public events(we provide free filtered wifi for the events) we'll have up to 15 or so.  We use nearly everything and never have put nay kind of serious load on the box.

The P4 is a dog of a CPU. Still it should be fine for home use (1-10 users).

I would suggest snagging a core2 based cpu if you can find one for a similar price.

I beta tested on a machine slower then that and had almost everything on.  It worked fine for one user, but I was not able to get my full download speed of over 30 Mbit/sec.  The web admin interface was a tad slow too, but not bad. 

I use a low power dual core AMD proc with 2 gigs of RAM with almost everything on and it just screams. [:)]

P4 2,4 GHz and 1 Gig of Memory is abslutely fine und performant for home use. I personally prefer AMD or newer P4 or it's successors with powersaving features. A normal "old" P4 uses usually continous >70W because of lacking powersaving features and with Chipset and HDD you have some 100W energy consumer as home asg ==> $$ [:)]

If your ASG is a 7x24 system (what I assume), i'd recommend you to spend some more $$ for a more energy efficient system than a P4.

my celey system has no power savings at all and it doesn't draw 100W ever.  the xeon box i have in system 2 is a p-4 xeon and doesn't draw 100W either.  a p-4 at idle will draw less than any p-4 celey due to the fact that the p-4 DOES have power savings built in and active while the celeys do not.  However there's no escaping the fact that p-4's in general are horribly inefficient processors..[:)]
