AOpen DE2700

Ok, it took me a bit to find out this info, but if you look at the downloads section for the DE2700 it looks like the driver from back in June supports the following chipsets: RTL8169/8110, RTL8139/810x, RTL8139C.  Are any of these chipsets supported by ASG?

Hi, I believe all of those are supported by Astaro, but afaik only the 8110's are gigE.

Like I said, the 8110 is supported, but I don't know if the 8110 'E' would be supported or not.

Did anyone ever try this out?  Im thinking about picking up a DE2700 unit for this exact purpose.  Need to know if anyone has it working.

Hi, Astaro version 8 has much better hardware support.

Wow, that is a pretty cool little box.

I was trying to do some research. After multiple web searches I did not find anybody who actually opened the unit to provide pictures and they are all using the stock hardware descriptions. I downloaded the Aopen driver package for this unit, unfortunately it was the base "FULL" gigabit driver pack from Realtek which includes all the drivers, for everything.

But after some deductive reasoning I came up with this. I would bet that they are using the RTL8111, what version? Who knows. We know they are Gb NICs. The RTL816x chips are big, mostly used in add-on cards. RTL8168 for PCI-E and RTL8169 for PCI. Since this is an Atom with a 945 NB and motherboard "especially Mini-ITX" manufacturers are conscious of board real-estate. I would suspect they would use the RTL8111 since it is PCI-E and smaller. The RTL8110 is PCI based. So it "Should"" be compatible.

As far as the hard drive, I believe 5400 RPM would work fine. When I did my dad's ASG box, I got him a 5400 2.5" SATA II drive , but got one with the biggest drive cache I could, I think it was 8MB vs. the standard 2MB. It works great.

I grabbed one of these DE2700's from Newegg, added a 160 Western Digital 2.5" SATA drive, and 2G Kingston RAM. So far its working well.

I can't speak to the compatibility of the Aopen box you listed, but I would go with the 7200RPM drive; they generally have faster random access times, which will certainly be a help if you use the http proxy caching feature of the Astaro.

you are right, but I think 5400rpm hd's are more reliable... less rpm = less heat = more life

7200 rpm drives are not going to help unless you have hundreds or more machines behind the firewall.  ASG's caching only caches small(less than 50KB) objects so the actual bandwidth savings are not going to be great.  Couple that with the fact most sites are generated dynamically for each user and caching really doesn't do much of anything(which probably explains why the object size is small..
