I can't speak to the compatibility of the Aopen box you listed, but I would go with the 7200RPM drive; they generally have faster random access times, which will certainly be a help if you use the http proxy caching feature of the Astaro.

Hi, without knowing the Realtek NIC models, it's impossible to know if Astaro will work.

65w is plenty for the PS. I measured my MSI Atom GSE system with a kill-a-watt meter; it's drawing 17 watts average, and 21w during POST.

How much is that selling for?

Bleh... Yeah, I checked the manufacturers website and it just says Realtek NIC, no idea which chip they are using.

Good to know about the PS

I saw it with 160GB 7200rpm drive and 2GB SO-DIMM 533MHz RAM for around $420 (with shipping) over at Logic Supply.  If you just buy the system, you can go to some place like Newegg and pick up the HDD and the RAM for a few dollars cheaper.  I estimated about $380 (with shipping) this way.  But if you do that then Logic Supply can't burn it in for you (if you want that).

The MSI IM-945GSE-A board, Morex T-3310 case, RAM, and a hard drive would be about the same price at LogicSupply... and as you know it works fine in Astaro [:)]

LogicSupply seems to have raised the price on the board, and they want a lot for the RAM (wow RAM has gone up, I got 2 2GB for $20 or $30!), but they're still around $400 + shipping with the RAM and a 7200RPM HD.

Getting the RAM and HD elsewhere should bring that down a lot; on my Deal Search site (link below), I see 2GB DDR2 SODIMM RAM for $44-50, or $57 for 2 (4GB kit). No burn-in this way of course.

FWIW, 2GB was overkill for my firewall; I only got it 'cause it was on sale; My average RAM usage is only 380MB -- 1GB would have been fine for me. (I'm not using the http proxy, fwiw.)

That's good to know about the RAM.  I know the minimum amount is 1GB but the spec sheet says 2 is preferable. But like you stated, the system that I currently have (which sees about 75GB/mo of traffic) only ever gets to about 28% of the available mem pool, and the place where I will be installing the new box won't see probably even 1/10 that amount of traffic.  

I was looking at the new box mostly because of the form factor: it's only about 6.5 x 6.5 x 1.5, which is really very small, quite a bit smaller than the Morex box I have.  I was trying to keep the size of the installed equipment very small mostly for asthetics.

considering most of the proxying is done in ram and it only 4k max you won't notice the difference between 5.4 and 7.2k unless you have more than 25 users are heavily use logging/accounting as well as proxy caching.

Thanks for the info on the drive. Yeah this box will see at most 3 concurrent users who are mostly checking email and doing classwork: no huge load. I'm always a big fan of spending the least amount I need to that gets the job done.

IF the NICs are supported (not sure as they're apparently an "E" revision of the RTL8111), that would be a very compact and very low-power (6watts) firewall.

However, Fit PC's web site says they're sold out of of the pc2i model, and doesn't seem to have pricing.
