Multiple Lan interfaces?

I have a computer with 4 NICs.  I want to use 3 of them to provide different subnets to separate certain computers on Lan.  Is this possible?

  • You shouldn't connect multiple interfaces to the same physical LAN.  Providing different subnets is a solution to a problem - what is the problem you want to solve?

  • I just want to create 3 gateways each with its own dhcp server.  Is that possible?

    Yes, it is possible. I have a quad netcard installed in my system and use the following setup:

    Interface1 = WAN
    Interface2 = 172.16.1.*
    Interface3 = 192.168.1.*
    Interface4 = 10.1.0.*

    The DHCP server provides IP addresses on all 3 private LANs.

    Is this what you are looking for??
  • YOu should segregate the traffic for the separate lans either by using separate switches, or using a switch properly configured with VLANs to segregate the traffic; of course, if you have a switch that support VLANs, you can use just one network interface for the multiple internal subnets via tagging.

  • Yes ctrlaltdel, thats what I wanted to know, thanks.

    I would rather use vlans but unfortunately my switches don't support it.

    I tried to use multiple switches before but unfortunately i'm using linksys routers configured to act as a switch.  I don't think the routers can understand which is the master switch so it doesn't work properly.
  • There is no 'master' switch.

    Each of the 3 networks needs to be COMPLETELY separate.

  • Get some cheap switches from the local big box store.  Using routers as switches can be problematic.  You could also try eBay, you can find old switch kit on there that does support VPN for pretty low cost, and there's nothing wrong with it.  One of my techs did just that, got himself a 3COM VLAN-capable switch for very little cash.
