Intel G31 chipset... will it work?

why not get a low end dell poweredge or hp server?  They are validated as servers and astaro works fine on most of them instead of using a desktop chpset.

I do not want a box that big, as it has to fit in a small space.  That and it would probably cost me more then what I am looking at. 

I was hoping someone would have it running on a G31 based motherboad.

Is anyone successfully running Astaro on a new chipset?

how big of a box are you talking about?

I have just enough space for the case that I have.  It runs a  bit hot  because the heat blows  back in.  I would love a shallow depth 1 u rack that I could put on top though.  The Dell rackmounts are just to deep.  If the Dell towers are like the ones at work, then they are just to big.  

I want a dual core becuase of the number of CIDR blocks that I will have.  I am on 30 Mbit FIOS and  I can pull two streams at 1.6-1.7 Meg (Yes just over a floppy disk of data) a second. I do not want any slowdown from having tons of blocks.  In my current system (P3 733, 1 gig) I had to cut the number of blocks by more then half when my FIOS speed went from 10 to 30. (Not Astaro - IPCop with Banish add on) I also want some room for more blocks in the future.

I could run with a motherboard that has only two PCI slots... by running some VLANS. (I just got 5 or 6 3com 24 port switches that appear to support VLAN.)

is this a home installation or business?

Home.  I have a 25 IP license.  I have been testing the new beta and working on a 50 IP license.

I do not bit torrent, or anything like that... but I do download a large number of huge files.  Mostly .iso files and video files. The video files are streaming and are failry big. ( They are for schoo.) I am often straming these videos while downloading from my MSDN account. (Again for school.) My GF often is plaing a game on the net or working on something that does require a decent amount of bandwidth.  So, I do not want to slow down my connection!

well if youa really that heavy of a user you are going to need 2 gigs of ram at least and a fast dual-core or a really fast single core.  g31 SHOULD work but there's no official word.  Astaro has worked on just about everything i have thrown at it and the g31 is actually an aging chipset so it should work fine.  If you are having heat issues with a p-3 you are going to have probably damaging heat issues if you try to stuff a dual core anything in there..i would advise a new case of some kind.

The case I will be using for the dual core is smaller and will give room for the heat to vent out the back of the" pc desk", for lack of a better description. I am not  worried about that.

I am looking at either 2 gigs or 4 gigs with a core 2 duo 2.5 or higher.

Hi guys, seems like it doesn't work at all!

I bought a G31 MB cause I wanted a small but powerfull FW, but the setup always gets stuck during the hardware detection. No more keyboard input possible and even the "Num-Lock" key-LED goes off.

Sucks!!! Payed about 500€ for the system [:(]

€dit: Tried to disable all more advanced settings in the BIOS, tested an other OS installation (without ANY problems) and so on... I have no idea, why it doesn't work.

What version of Astaro did you try?
