How many users/traffic was the ASG320 designed to handle?

It's about more than just users; other factors are how much traffic, which features are enabled, how many emails (if you're using the Email Security features) traverse the device, etc.  It's safe to to say that if you have a 320 that is exceeding 70% RAM usage on 7.306, it's a good idea to update to 2GB of RAM... the official RAM upgrades from Astaro are not too expensive (and I recommend them; using other memory can void your support and warranty), and you'll be able to use the new features and see improved performance.  Contact your Reseller for details.

John, that depends on what load you put on it; somewhere between 60 (heavy users of email security, web security and IPS) and 350 (mostly just firewall and VPN).  The developers are saying that the new HTTPS Proxy is hungrier than the HTTP.

What's your situation?

OMG... I inherited a public school network. We haave two ASG 320's.. Only one was running for the past 3 years. The last guy in my position never put them in HA mode. I finally got that working. I want to say we have about 400 students and about 400 staff. They are all not surfing the web or sending email all at once, but it sounds like my devices are not made to handle this amount of traffic. Here are some stats off the dashboard.

HTTP Proxy is active, 247 680 requests served today
SMTP Proxy is active, 3 445 emails processed, 2 283 emails blocked

Is there anything I could post so you guys could get a better idea of my situation? I will be going for the memory upgrade. I contacted my reseller today.

That is very light usage per person.  If you have those units clustered, I wonder if you might not have a misconfiguration.  I have one client that runs on a single 220 with higher email loads than that and about half the http requests; they normally average about 20% of CPU and don't suffer any slowdowns or blockages.  We will add memory for them though since it averages almost 70% and is too-often at 80% at present.

Your reseller should be able to help you with these questions.  You can click on my name and email me to get my direct email address.  If you send me a copy of a recent weekly Executive Report, I'd be glad to see if I see anything I'd be worried about.

having 400 users of mixed usages is just fine. That appliance is unlimited use regardless, so you do not have to worry about any sort of limiter getting in your way. We have some installations with 500-600 'users' behind a single 320, it really depends on internet bandwidth, number of requests, and many factors. You have the advantage of not having to guess, since your units are in production and you have access to the reporting and graphs to make educated choices (or we can certainly help you!)

From the information you post, the boxes do not look that overloaded, and you can of course have the piece of mind of using the HA as a reliable fail over for stability, but if the one 320 bows under load, swithcing over to the same unit probably will not fix such a problem.

You do have a few options, looking at what you have, however for 100 dollars doubling the ram on the 320's is a good, affordable upgrade that will offer more life into those units and extend their abilities for the future. Further, you also have the option to upgrade at anytime to an active/active cluster where both units share the load, and your sales contact/partner can assist you with pricing on this.

You are doin' fine!  Get the memory upgraded just because you can.  I assume you are in "Hot Standby" mode and not "Cluster" at this time - it doesn't look like you're anywhere near needing to spend the extra money to add Web and Mail subscriptions for the second 320 in order to cluster.  Kudos to your reseller for putting you into the Astaro in the right way.

Correct I configured the two devices to run in HA mode. A while back before I was the network admin here, we had one of the astaro's hdd's fail. Since the previous admin didn't have them in HA mode, we were down for a while.

Thanks for the help, I'm finishing the PO for the subscription renew and two memory upgrades.
