LinkSys NIC not compatible with version 7??

I have tried numerous times to get Astaro working on a box with a LinkSys 10/100 nic. The LAN here is usign 192.168.1.x and so I configured the Astaro to use 192.168.1.200 and Gateway 192.168.1.100 and the box never responded to pings. I tried another reinstall with the default settings. Configured another box here to use 192.168.2.101 255.255.255.0 and gate 192.168.2.100 and same thing the Astaro never responded to pings.

This doesn't make much sense.
Astaro's gateway setting would be on the EXT interface, not on your LAN.

You do have 2 NICs, right?

Yes LinkSys 10/100 for eth0 and a Dlink on eth1. I am following the instructions in the ASGV7_QuickstartGuide.pdf in particular step #2 where it states the following:

Admin Client
Before you can access the WebAdmin interface, you will need to configure the Admin Client with the LAN connection properties. This properties can later be changed to the IP addresses used in the local network. 
The filing position of the menu for these settings depends on the operating system of the client. Example: With Microsoft Windows XP the menu can be found under Start/System Control/Network connections. 
LAN connection properties:
IP Address: Any address in the range 192.168.2.1 through 
192.168.2.254 (192.168.2.100 excepted) 
Netmask: Enter 255.255.255.0
Standard Gateway: Enter the IP address of the appliance’s 
internal network card (eth0): 192.168.2.100 
DNS Server: Enable this option and enter the IP address of 
the internal network card (eth0): 192.168.2.100 

I did this on another computer and connected it to the LAN as well as directly to the eth0 (LinkSys) via both a normal and a crossover cat5 cable. In neither case could this computer get a response to the ping 192.168.2.100 which is the Astaro box.

Did you try connecting to the other NIC? The astaro installation may have recognized the dlink as eth0.

To check the NIC's I would suggest hooking up a monitor and keyboard to the astaro and logging into the console of the astaro as root(since the webadmin wizard hasn't been run yet the root password will be blank and it should prompt you to set it). Then run ifconfig to see if the NICs are recognized and the IP addresses have been set properly.

No never tried connecting to the other NIC. Since during the installation the software indicated LinkSys was eth0.


When I  boot the Astaro, it loads and then has a "Enter Run Level:" prompt. Is there a login prompt in one of the other virtual terminal screens so that I can login as root? What would the default password be?

From the description I don't think astaro is installed properly. You might want to re-install.

You should see the IP address of eth0 with a login prompt below it.
ex:

192.168.0.1
login:

Well I must of reinstalled Astaro 5 or 6 times trying to fix this connection problem, however I have not verified on each of these installs whether they all were showing the Runlevel prompt. However several have and all had the prompt to remove the CD and reboot computer. 

I did notice after the first attempt that I had to use "classic" install to disable APIC otherwise the install would fail and I would never see the prompt to remove the CD and restart the computer.  When I get a chance I can try another install.

Solved the problem. The documentation said nothing about a prompt Asking whether you wanted to only install the open source software and the Executive Interface so I have always been saying NO to install both of these software. This time around I said YES to it and lo and behold the software installed properly this time. I get the Astaro screen come up with the IP address login prompt. Is there any way to change the IP address of the gateway at the prompt or does that have to be done via the web gateway?

When installing Astaro there is a prompt asking whether you want to install just the Open source software. The prompt also mentions about installing some  Executive interface software. I have always hit ESC at that point. Is that correct if one wants to use the free Astaro Home version of the software?

As I said earlier, you need to do a FULL install, not just the Open Source components.

You SHOULD NOT HIT ESCAPE during the install.

After installation, you'd need to change the IP through the web interface.
Or, you can re-install and set it during installation.
