LinkSys NIC not compatible with version 7??

If the ASG software sees the NIC, that isn't the problem, it is a configuration issue on one end or the other.  Does the NIC show as an available interface?

Make sure you have ping / icmp enabled on the firewall if you want to use pings to test with.

Yes it sees it during installation and is selected as eth0.

Make sure you have ping / icmp enabled on the firewall if you want to use pings to test with.

This is right after the installation where I am suppose to be able to use the web interface to set up the passwords etc. from another machine on the same subnet. I even tried a straight thorough and a crossover cable between the two machines and still no pings. I disabled the software firewall on the XP computer I am trying to use as to admininster the Astaro machine.

When installing Astaro there is a prompt asking whether you want to install just the Open source software. The prompt also mentions about installing some  Executive interface software. I have always hit ESC at that point. Is that correct if one wants to use the free Astaro Home version of the software?

In my case the LAN is on the 192.168.1.x subnet. Is there any problem during install to specify 192.168.1.100 for the Astaro system??

You need the entire installation, not just the open source parts.

You can get a free home user license file at
http://my.astaro.com

You can use whatever IP you want, but a firewall/gateway is more commonly setup as x.x.x.1 or x.x.x.254

I have tried numerous times to get Astaro working on a box with a LinkSys 10/100 nic. The LAN here is usign 192.168.1.x and so I configured the Astaro to use 192.168.1.200 and Gateway 192.168.1.100 and the box never responded to pings. I tried another reinstall with the default settings. Configured another box here to use 192.168.2.101 255.255.255.0 and gate 192.168.2.100 and same thing the Astaro never responded to pings.

This doesn't make much sense.
Astaro's gateway setting would be on the EXT interface, not on your LAN.

You do have 2 NICs, right?

Astaro's gateway setting would be on the EXT interface, not on your LAN.

Yes LinkSys 10/100 for eth0 and a Dlink on eth1. I am following the instructions in the ASGV7_QuickstartGuide.pdf in particular step #2 where it states the following:

Admin Client
Before you can access the WebAdmin interface, you will need to configure the Admin Client with the LAN connection properties. This properties can later be changed to the IP addresses used in the local network. 
The filing position of the menu for these settings depends on the operating system of the client. Example: With Microsoft Windows XP the menu can be found under Start/System Control/Network connections. 
LAN connection properties:
IP Address: Any address in the range 192.168.2.1 through 
192.168.2.254 (192.168.2.100 excepted) 
Netmask: Enter 255.255.255.0
Standard Gateway: Enter the IP address of the appliance’s 
internal network card (eth0): 192.168.2.100 
DNS Server: Enable this option and enter the IP address of 
the internal network card (eth0): 192.168.2.100 

I did this on another computer and connected it to the LAN as well as directly to the eth0 (LinkSys) via both a normal and a crossover cat5 cable. In neither case could this computer get a response to the ping 192.168.2.100 which is the Astaro box.

Did you try connecting to the other NIC? The astaro installation may have recognized the dlink as eth0.

To check the NIC's I would suggest hooking up a monitor and keyboard to the astaro and logging into the console of the astaro as root(since the webadmin wizard hasn't been run yet the root password will be blank and it should prompt you to set it). Then run ifconfig to see if the NICs are recognized and the IP addresses have been set properly.

No never tried connecting to the other NIC. Since during the installation the software indicated LinkSys was eth0.


When I  boot the Astaro, it loads and then has a "Enter Run Level:" prompt. Is there a login prompt in one of the other virtual terminal screens so that I can login as root? What would the default password be?
