up2date fails (7.200 to 7.201)

Product Version: only Astaro Security Gateway 7.2

 

It has been discovered that ASG 7.200 Up2date may not be functioning on some systems if you updated directly from 7.104 to 7.200 on an ASG appliance before Monday, June 2nd. 

 

If you have updated to 7.200 in this timeframe,  the following issue may affect your system, and you will need to make a small change to ensure the delivery of up2dates.

 

If you have downloaded but not installed ASG V7.200 up2date yet, no further action is required.

 

What's the Issue?

 

 Summary

    Due to an exception in our up2date distribution system an RPM package was excluded in the 7.200 Up2Date.

 

    This package has no functional code, but is merely identification tag to differentiate device models. As this identification is missing, the up2date installer is not able to download all appropriate updates.

Resolution
 

The following short steps will allow Astaro to detect all appropriate up2dates.

 

1)  Login to the Astaros shell as loginuser

2)  Type su  and enter your root password to enable root permissions

3)  Paste exactly the following command onto the shell, and hit enter to run:

    rpm -q ep-asg && cd /tmp && wget http://www.testastaro.com/files/rpm/ep-asg-7.2-23.i686.rpm && rpm -Uvh /tmp/ep-asg-7.2-23.i686.rpm

    

 

    This command will check if this patch is needed, and if yes download the missing rpm package and install it.

 

    If the systems returns 'package ep-asg is not installed', then you do not have an ASG Hardware Appliance and you do not need this patch.

 

    If the system returns 'package ep-asg-7.2-23 is already installed', than you have the correct RPM, and no further action is required.

 

*For Clustered systems, run the same command for each node.

Thanks for your replies.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to use SSH - I have a linux box with an SSH client, but for some reason I can't login using the known root password.  It'll take some research, but I can probably figure it out.  I'm not exactly proficient in Linux...

(Sigh.)  Nothing's easy, everything takes so much time!

To SSH into an Astaro box, you have to login using the loginuser account first, then you use 'su' to login as root.  If you don't want to use a Linux client, check out "putty" ... use google and you'll find it, it works fine on Windows systems.

I had found PuTTY, and used it...

I was unable to login as root:  ACCESS DENIED, even though I am certain of the password and have no complex passwords required.  Not sure what's up with that...

I did login as loginuser and ran the command.

It said: "package ep-asg" is not installed, which apparently means I don't have an ASG appliance and don't need the update.

Of course, I know I don't have an ASG appliance - I have a downloaded ISO file installed on a PC.  It still won't install the 7.201 update (fails every time).

I realize this is a free product, and understand why they can't provide support for free downloads, but I am using it to determine whether or not to use or recommend Astaro, and to learn how to support it.  (I have one client with an ASG220, and try things out on my downloaded system before recommending it on his.)  A relevant Knowledge Base document would suffice, but I guess the one linked in a previous response doesn't apply to my situation...

Anyway, I still have the problem - can't install 7.201.  More importantly, though, I believe I won't be able to install ANY updates in the future.

That command doesn't work - I get a usage guide, so there's a syntax problem.  You may not quite understand how little I know about Linux...

I started using Astaro at home, not because I have a proficiency in Linux, but in spite of my lack of same.   It's complaining that the argument "nodeps" in an unknown option.

So, I ran your command without the --nodeps.  It ran, outputting the following:

Before I started this thread, I also tried downloading the update manually, and uploading it to the router just in case.  I also notice that there is a newer pattern available, but it's not being installed either.

So, it appears that the bad firmware update has not only stopped firmware updates from installing, but also IPS and AV updates.

Given your admitted lack of Unix knowledge, and with this not being a license with a maintenance agreement ... I would just download the 7.200 ISO, backup your configuration, reinstall 7.200 from scratch.  Restore your backup, then up2date to 7.201.

I had the the same problem.

You can maualy install the downloaded update with the following command:

auisys.plx --level d

you must be logged in as "su"

I tried the instructions from the up2date page to install the extra rpm package... well i'm getting this:

Sounds like good advice - setup of this thing is pretty quick, and this should resolve it.  I took a backup of it before running the suggested command last night, and saved it for this purpose.

Someone at Astaro must have egg on his/her face over this!  But for me (using the router in a personal environment) the extra work is no big deal - certainly worth it considering the original cost of the software.

Thanks for your input (and your patience in dealing with such a neophyte).  I didn't expect to need advanced Unix knowledge!  I did learn a few things, however, and that's always a good thing.

Arghh...every second support case I try to open directly with Astaro I get the following upsetting standard answer and have to route it through our reseller to start Astaro to do something. Really annoying.

Since yesterday, when I updated our ASG 320 boxes from V7.200 to V7.201 our ASG320's use much more CPU (up to 100% for longer periods). The process "pfilter-reporter" is eating up all the CPU power and the "paket filter" logfiles are growing tremendous and are getting huge and the whole ASG320 is getting very slow ! Actually the "paket filter" logfile from today is 2.2 GB in size (normally the last week ist was under 0.5 MB per day) !

If you run a HA/Cluster, it's necessary to install the missing rpm package on both systems. All you have to do is to install the rpm package on MASTER as described before and perform a reboot afterwards by typing: 'reboot'. Please wait until the takeover was successfully and install the rpm package on the NEW MASTER.

Done!

Since this is off-topic in this thread, I'd suggest to start a new thread for this issue. And please take a look into your packet filter logfile - if it is growing that fast there must be some evidence of what is going on in it.
