Have you tried loading a recent Fedora or Ubuntu live CD/DVD to figure out what drivers it uses?

So are you saying that ASG installs but then fails to boot, or the ASG installer does not load?

1/. XP loaded without missing a beat
2/. ASG loaded and ran to the hardware check window and stops advising to remove the CD and restart the PC.
3/. Vista 32 won't even read the CD
4/. Mandriva 32/64 won't even read the CD.

I have changed the CD/DVD and it didn't make any difference.

Tonight I will replace the sata drive with a straight IDE and see what happens.

The whole thing is very strange, I haven't struck a setup where linux will not load.

Try running MemTest86 (boot) or the Prime95 (windows or linux) stress-test.

changed to an IDE drive and it loads, well I let it get as far as formatting the partitions. So, that means the new ATI SB600 will have to wait a few kernel releases before becomes and accepted SATA controller.

The onboard lan card is Gigabyte PCIe LAN controller is also unsupported.

I stopped it because I need to re-wire the drive in correctly and add 2 more NICs or at least one more and try some VLAN stuff.[[[:)]]][[[:)]]][[[:)]]]

What chipset does the onboard LAN card use? If you can grab lspci output, hopefully Astaro will see it and look to adding support for the next kernel update.

the amd690 is a very new chipset form amd.  You will most likely have inconsistent results under many operating systems with this machine until the drivers shake out..

SATA support seems to be a real problem. I've been using IBM (now Lenovo) systems for years but some change to current Lenovo SATA controller causes the system to fail the hardware check even though XP and SuSE load fine. 

Any time the hardware check fails you can simply press  and open up the alternate screen where you can see the failure. I would bet on yours you would see either 'disk found 0' or 'CD found 0' if they are both SATA which many new system are.

The real problem is that Astaro 7 is based off kernel 2.6.16.43.

Not only is the kernel 2.6.16.43 itself approaching a year old now, but 2.6.16 dates back 2 years, which means that the majority of the drivers are likely to have originated since then. Which also means that any new drivers added to the kernel in the past 2 years to support new hardware will not  be available unless Astaro goes through the effort of back-porting them.

Astaro obviously has some patches on top of 2.6.16.43 (since their full kernel release version is 2.6.16.43-54.5) but without having looked at the source code, I don't know what changes they've made.

Hopefully they've included the security fixes included between 2.6.16.44 and 2.6.16.59 which have been released since Adrian Bunk has been maintaining the 2.6.16 branch.

a fresh install after removing the faulty NIC. Same problems, tried an older ISO same problem.
Mysql server cannot connect through socket (2) error 2002 HY000.

The reason for the higher CPU occupancy was the mysql server not connecting causing very large log files for smtp, pop3 and one other service I can't remember.

I have put my old firewall back on line with my my new configuration and all seems to be going well. E-mail is working again both personal and firewall through the proxies.

Any ideas on how to get mysql to connect would be greatly appreciated. Mysql is running, has been stopped and re-started, but still doesn't connect.

Long ago, Astaro had some custom changes to the kernel code, IIRC it was for portscan detection or something like that. They did release the source.
Anyways, I believe it was later replaced with Snort or PortSentry or something else (outside the kernel).

AFAIK, the kernels they are using now are standard linux kernels, with some extra optional modules from the NetFilter project. The 'customization' is just in the build options.
It would be nice if they'd release the build config, but I don't know if it's required by the GPL.

I've been asking for quite awhile how to setup a build environment so that I can get TShark (WireShark) compiled to run on ASL... it's impossible to do a static build of current versions of WireShark for some reason.

Yes, they should be in the iso downloadable here (I haven't actually downloaded an iso myself and inspected the contents to verify):
