Installation Woes

Ok, so.... I'm not sure what's happening here. I have Clarkconnect installed and running, but I wanted to try Astaro.

I burned the install CD and tried installing, but it never gets to the point of booting.

Loading bzimage

Loading initrd
Ready.

And it reboots here, with no error messages or anything. I've tried all three methods of install, , classic and nosmp; they all produce the same results.

I have an Intel, rackmount server chassis with a L440GX+ mainboard with dual PIII 500s with 512mb ECC ram.

Is the hardware listed on the HCL the ONLY supported hardware?

no that's the only hardware Astaro has tested.  My setup isn't certified but it runs fine.  Try installing in classic mode.

  • when installing try  or  to see some logs.

I don't even get to the install screen, only the 'flavor' screen where you pick which install you want to run.
  • the  screens should show up regardless, unless your graphics adapter is totally unsupported... try a different video card (nothing fancy is needed).

  • Try burning the CD at the lowest speed your burner supports.
Try a different CD Reader in the firewall.

  • I might add, make sure there is only ONE CDROM Drive, and only ONE Hard drive in the system... Astaro software will not install properly with "too many" drives in the system.

  • Burning/trying another ASL-Versions (older) can sometimes help.

  • Well, looks like there's some sort of other issue also. Out of interest, I tried loading the gentoo CD and it does the same thing. I think CC only works because of the new kernel used on it.

This hardware has had issues in the past with the Adaptec SCSI driver.

Oh well, at least I have one distro that'll run :/
  • You might try the CLASSIC install (or NOACPI or NOAPIC if those still exist).

Also, you might make sure that all the BIOS/firmware are current on your motherboard and SCSI controller.
