ASG220: how many RAM-slots?

does anybody know, how many RAM-slots the ASG220 has? one of our customers wants to upgrade the RAM, but i dont know how many slots are available

    This is not possible to add some RAM in a ASG220 otherwise you will loose the warranty ( the screws are seals ), but indeed the question is why do you want to upgrade the RAMs, how many users are behind the ASG cause normally till 150 users there is no problem with the ram or CPU usage.

    Ask your distributor for an competitiv Upgrade to an ASG320 or ASGS

    the problem is, that memusage is most of the time at about 90%. the customer uses the smtp-proxy with spam/antivirus-check and i think, this causes the high memusage and of course a high load.

    I am seeing similar results on a client's 220 that has under 75 active users, using SMTP proxy and HTTP proxy. The system was continuously running out of swap and ram, hyperdyper (this is v6 still) using over 400MB. 

    The system would regularly become unresponsive and need a reboot, sometimes more than once a week.

    We plan on putting V7 on it soon, once I feel V7 would be stable enough for it.

    You can't add RAM to a 220; the chipset on the system board in it only supports 512MB.  There's no way to upgrade the memory in this appliance.  You may want to talk to your reseller to see if they have a trade up that they can put you in.  I know we did one for one of our customers, traded them up to a 320.  Fixed all the performance problems they were having (they turned out to have much heavier usage than they originally thought).

    Astaro support told me I should upgrade my RAM to 1 or 2Gb and I am running an ASG220.  Are they mistaken?  I am having similar issues with 30 users and memory problems on our ASG.  We are running the virus/spyware/SMTP, DNS & HTTP proxies.

    You're not "screwed," but I did ask Astaro Support (I guess the folks you talked to didn't know about the memory restrictions on the 220) and additionally, checked the documentation for the Nexcom board that's in the 220:  The chipset used on that board does not support any more than 512MB.  Your reseller can either upgrade you to a 320, or you can switch to a Software license and run it in a VM or on dedicated hardware.  I have done both for customers of mine that outgrew the 220.  They are now selling a "new" 220 (this has happened only the past few weeks), that has a faster processor, bigger HD... not sure if they RAM restriction has been lifted, though.

    What is the cost of the 320 upgrade roughly?
     
    I guess I need to think this out, I like the rackmount ASG so would prefer an upgrade BUT I do have a couple of P4 desktops hanging around that would do a better job than the current ASG.
     
    Is there a charge for switching license types?

    I don't have time today to go dig up the info... but trust me, that is the limit.  Pricing for upgrading to a 320 would have to be provided by your reseller; it depends on how much time you have left on your current subscriptions / maintenance, etc.  I would contact them.

    No problem, thanks for your time to respond.  I will contact my dealer, we just renewed so I am a little disappointed that we seem to have outgrown this box in just over a year - we just added virus/spyware, etc.

    I will say one more thing, though; if you are on Version 7.x, hold out for the next release or 2 (if you can); They are changing the spam engine out for one that uses less resources, and I also have heard on the board here that they are going to swap out Squid for a custom HTTP proxy that uses less resources as well... should help with the memory issues.


    PS: the new 220s, I've found, do support more memory than 512 (these are ones sold in the past few weeks) ... maybe that's what Astaro Support was thinking of.  Perhaps "upgrading" to one of those may be an option; I'm currently checking, for my own info, on what Astaro's policy will be on being able to upgrade the  memory (from a support / warranty standpoint).

    Good info, I will ask my dealer about an 'upgrade' to a new 220 board as it would seem we need the RAM.
     
    I have not upgraded to v7.  From reading the boards it seems problematic and I have problems already :-)
     
    The rebuild option seems to be the best bet it would seem but I don't know how I would transfer/restore the certificates I have for the VPN clients, etc.
     
    Fingers crossed if the engines do change then it will weigh me more towards doing the upgrade.  I am just worried about downtime and normally try to do all work in-house rather than pay for external resource.....going for the Astaro solution to me seemed a no brainer as it seemed very easy to manage, seems not so easy on the upgrade though lol(!)
