[6.304] High CPU Load

I believe that's part of the webmin.

Are you seeing that all the time, or just when using webmin?

Everytime I am in WebAdmin. At one point it reached 99.9 CPU Utilization! Otherwise my system is fine. Am I dogging my box? Do I need to remove some security services (HTTP Proxy, SMTP Proxy)?

And what did you click in the webadmin? The syscall facility is used by the webadmin to spawn an external program to gather some information, e.g. for gathering information about the emails in quarantine ...

Basically I log in and check the Reporting > Hardware and Proxy > Proxy Content Manager.

We are using an ASG120. I believe their are two versions of this one with 256MB of RAM and one with 512MB. I have the 512MB system. Could I upgrade the memory in the system?

Hi-Con:  The ASG 110,120, and 220 are all limited (in hardware) to 512MB, due to the chipsets these appliances utilize.  You are right, they are now shipping the 110/120 units with 512MB installed, instead of 256MB (I was one of the resellers that pushed on them to do this, we were having rather severe issues with WebAdmin on version 6 due to low memory).

All that said, I did a trade show just last week and had an older 120 that Astaro shipped me for demo at the show (all my demos were out in the field), and it had only 256MB in it... well, it worked just fine (no hangs in the Webadmin, etc.), and it was running Version 7.002... something might just be flaky with your install on that appliance, or there might be some other issue... since you have an appliance, I'm assuming you have Gold or Platinum maintenance... I'd give support a call, I've always had good experiences with those guys.

Oh, before you call... try updating to Version 7.003--it has a laundry list of fixes, and seems to be working OK so far on our test system.  If you are running Version 6, make sure you are running Version 6.304.

It is normal for the webmin processes to use a lot of CPU for short periods of time.

Thanks for all the help. I spoke to support and they say the machine is underpowered for my setup. However when I discussed the needs with my reseller they said the ASG120 would be perfect. This only seems to happen when I use the webadmin. It calms down after that. I am using the ASG120 with HTTP Proxy (AV, Anti-spyware, content filtering), SMTP Proxy (AV, Antispam), IPS, DNS Proxy, IPSEC VPN (5 tunnels) and a quite a few DNAT/SNAT rules with External aliases (46 approx.) We only ever have around 5 - 15 people using the internet at one time, however the box is counting 87 IPs!? These IPs could be the SharePoint and other IIS sites we have running on separate IPs.

They do take a few seconds to complete. Proxy Content Manager takes the longest (almost a 1min or 2). Otherwise it is still responsive.

If we are dogging the box, and it is underpowered for our setup, would upgrading to 7.003 help? I would like to wait for the 6.305 (Reported to help migrate conf. settings to V7 upgrade). We are running 6.304 at the moment. If not then I may need to move some of the security services off the box (e.g HTTP Proxy and SMTP Proxy) and use it as a Firewall/IPS instead of UTM. [:(] (Possibly move those services to dedicated VM's (HAVP+ Squid for HTTP Proxy, and Proxmox for SMTP Proxy)

What do you guys think?

I'd have to know more about your setup... number of users isn't the only thing I take into account when I quote a customer an Astaro solution.  Sometimes even just a 5 user setup will demand more horsepower than the 110/120 can provide, if the customer is hosting websites, or all the users are "power users".  In those situations, I just sell them the software license(s) needd and build them a small form factor P4 with a few NICs in it.  That said, I do have a couple of customers running the 110 / 120 appliances, but they are light users, and are limited to about 10 users.  At both of these sites, we have EVERYTHING turned on, seems to work fine... they are even still on Version 6 (we did upgrade the RAM in these units to 512MB before installation).  A couple of things to check / try:  If you have the anti-spam engine turned on, and are running Version 6, make sure you limit the Proxy Content Manager's number of retained SPAM emails to under 250... the algorithm for purging old quarantined emails "walks" each email every so often, and this is very CPU and HD intensive.  Version 7.x is more efficient at this, as it merely runs a query against a SQL DB instead.  One other thing to try is to factory reset the unit, and reconfigure it from scratch (not restoring a backup)... I've had an instance or 2 where something was somehow screwy with the config on the unit (even restored backups were goofy), and reconfiguring from scratch, even with the same settings, seemed to solve the problem.
