The easiest way is to use your Linksys just as a switch an Access-Point

To do this connect the ASL with one of the LAN-Ports from the Linksys

So I should connect the DSL modem to the Linksys like always and then connect the ASL to the Linksys just as you would a normal PC, or should the DSL modem be connected directly to the ASL?

If the DSL modem is connected to the Linksys, how will any traffic be passed through the ASL?

Slowly making some progress....

I changed the WAN port type to "Cable Modem (DHCP)" and that caused both the State and Link to change to "up", but I still have no internet access. Do I need to set up a DHCP server on the ASL or what about DNS server settings? As of right now, those settings are all still on default.

So.... how much documentation have you read?

I've read through the entire manual that came on the disc (v7) and several documents in the knowledge base, but everything is either pre version 7 or is really vague in this area.  I get the impression things were supposed to just work, but for some reason nothing works for me.

If there's some detailed guide to configuring the interfaces, I haven't found it yet.  I'm no genious but I do work with computers and networks on a daily basis and I don't see why I'm having so much trouble with this thing.

You aren't giving us enough information to help.

HOW does the connection from the LAN to the internet fail?
Have you performaned basic network troubleshooting?

Do the clients have an IP address?
Have you enabled/configured the DHCP server?

Are they able to resolve DNS?
Have you enabled/configured the DNS server?

Are connections timing out?
Does the firewall packet filter log show anything?
Have you enabled/configured any packet filter rules?
What packet filter rules do you have?

I believe the connection from LAN to internet fails because it can't find a DNS server. For example, when entering "google.com" in the browser, the status bar reads "looking up google.com" then "looking up www.google.com" and then the typical "page cannot be displayed".

The clients do have IP addresses as assigned by the Linksys router, which in turn is connected to the ASL.  OR I can connect the clients directly to the ASL with a DHCP server configured, then the IP's are assigned by ASL but still does not work.

I've tried to configure the DNS server but maybe that's what I'm doing wrong.  With gateways I've set up in the past, I selected the closest interface in the outbound direction, and that device would take care of the routing from there.

The firewall packet filter log does show some packets being filtered occassionally and both the LAN and WAN connections show some in/out traffic on the "dashboard".

The only packet filter rules that have been configured is whatever the initial setup wizard did when I logged on to ASL for the first time.

To troubleshoot DNS issues on clients, you need to know what DNS servers the clients are configured to use (usually configured through DHCP).

So unless you reconfigured your Linksys dhcp server to tell clients to use the ASL machine for DNS, obviously that isn't going to work. You probably want to disable the Linksys dhcp server and enable the one on ASL.

Use nslookup from the command line to check what DNS servers the clients are using. If they are configured to use the Linksys, good, you know what the problem is. If they are configured to use the ASL box, also good, now you know that the DNS proxy isn't configured.

There is also a tool on the ASL web admin interface which allows you to test DNS lookups there, too.

Well weird. I got on this morning and it's just working and I didn't change a thing. Still, it's very slow. The clients' DNS server is listed as the ASL WAN connection and on the ASL box in the Network > DNS > Forwarders settings, "currently assigned forwarders" is 192.168.0.1 (DSL modem's IP). 
Like I said, it's working but very ineffeciently.

nvm I fixed it. Now it's just a matter of tweaking and getting things like instant messenger and bit torrent to work.

Your cable modem/cable company probably needed time to clear out the MAC address off your previous linksys router.

With many cable systems, simply cycling power on the cable modem will register the new MAC address of the ASL interface with the cable providers.  Others require a phone call or just waiting xx minutes.

This is due to the systems only registering one IP address per cable modem (the assigned IP address is bound to the MAC address of the ethernet adapter).  This keeps people from simply plugging in a cable modem to an ethernet switch and allowing all of their computers to pull external IP addresses from the CableCo.  

Hence the need for NAT translation and the private IP address ranges:

E.g. 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255; 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255; 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

Yeah I don't know what was causing all the trouble. I came in this morning and nothing was working again, so after about 2 hours of messing with it, I reset to the default settings and it's good again. I'm still having trouble with MSN messenger but I'm sure I can figure that one out.
