So I should connect the DSL modem to the Linksys like always and then connect the ASL to the Linksys just as you would a normal PC, or should the DSL modem be connected directly to the ASL?

If the DSL modem is connected to the Linksys, how will any traffic be passed through the ASL?

DSL will plug into one port of ASL.
ASL will plug LAN port of Linksys.
LAN users will plug into Linksys.

What are you going to use the other 3 NICs on the ASL box for?

I guess my problem is I don't understand exactly how the ASL is supposed to work. 

Should all of the computers on the LAN connect to the Linksys and then the ASL, or should they connect to the ASL directly? 
If everything is connecting to the Linksys router and that router is connected to the ASL through a single eithernet port, isn't that going to create a bandwidth bottleneck?

It was my original understanding that each client on the LAN should have it's own dedicated ethernet port on the ASL. Is that not correct?

I currently have the DSL plugged into eth0 and the Linksys on eth1 of the ASL.  I also tried removing the Linksys and plugging the PC directly into eth1.  Either way, I can't access the internet from the LAN.

I'm guessing I don't have the DSL connection set up correctly, but as you can tell, I don't have a very solid idea of how ASL was designed to work.

The ASL has to be between your LAN and the evil internet

Plug the WAN-Port of the ASL to the DSL-Modem
Plug one of the Linksys LAN-Ports to one of the LAN-Ports of the ASL
Plug your PC's to the other LAN-Ports of the Linksys and the ASL

How many PC's do you want to connect via ethernet?
The connection between the LAN-Ports of the ASL and the LAN-Ports of the Linksys will be 100MBit
So, if you have 2 PC's on the ASL and 2 PC's on the Linksys they have to share this 100MBit
This is a bootleneck, but a very wide one [:)]

If you have just 3 or less PC's you can connect it directly to the ASL, but if you have more or cabeling will be easier if you connect them to the Linksys it will not matter

I have 2 desktops that are on ethernet full time plus a laptop that I usually plug in for faster file transfers over the LAN, plus a desktop in the other room that is on the wireless.

If I plug the DSL into the WAN port on the ASL, should it just automatically work, because so far it's not. I tried setting the connection type to "DSL (PPPOE)" but that didn't work, so I left it as "Ethernet Standard" simply because the DSL works when plugged directly into the ethernet port on a PC or the WAN port of the router.
Am I missing something here?

You probably need to change the ASL WAN port to "Cable Modem (DHCP)" if you are using V7 (you didn't say what version of ASL you are using).

Slowly making some progress....

I changed the WAN port type to "Cable Modem (DHCP)" and that caused both the State and Link to change to "up", but I still have no internet access. Do I need to set up a DHCP server on the ASL or what about DNS server settings? As of right now, those settings are all still on default.

So.... how much documentation have you read?

I've read through the entire manual that came on the disc (v7) and several documents in the knowledge base, but everything is either pre version 7 or is really vague in this area.  I get the impression things were supposed to just work, but for some reason nothing works for me.

If there's some detailed guide to configuring the interfaces, I haven't found it yet.  I'm no genious but I do work with computers and networks on a daily basis and I don't see why I'm having so much trouble with this thing.

You aren't giving us enough information to help.

HOW does the connection from the LAN to the internet fail?
Have you performaned basic network troubleshooting?

Do the clients have an IP address?
Have you enabled/configured the DHCP server?

Are they able to resolve DNS?
Have you enabled/configured the DNS server?

Are connections timing out?
Does the firewall packet filter log show anything?
Have you enabled/configured any packet filter rules?
What packet filter rules do you have?
