Would Astaro Port to this Platform?

To port ASG to a PowerPC based Linux environment would be a substantial software engineering move by Astaro, and it is rather doubtful if it would be worth their effort at this point. There simply aren't that many PPC machines out there to install it on.

First of all, while while it would be no small task, something tells me that PA Semi would gladly help Astaro with any porting effort if Astaro was looking to use these as their appliance platform so its not like they're on their own. 

Drivers, etc shouldn't be a problem, just contact the manufacturer. Since they ship development platforms with linux 2.6.18, i'm pretty sure they intend to support linux with drivers.

Sata support? why does that matter so much? ever hear of a sata/pata bridge? i have over a dozen of those working flawlessly in several different pc's for dvd-roms, hdd's etc. i don't really see the dealbreaker in that argument.

Price? granted this is an unknown to me but, generally as an appliance, especially a highly integrated appliance, it SHOULD be much cheaper than building a similar pc without even half the specs of this platform.

I have been trying with leftovers from upgrades and the odd bit of extra memory. I tried with a Celeron 1300a, but while it was lower power, it didn't seem to have enough grunt for my configuration, where as the current box has way too much grunt. The Celeron ran with high CPU occupancy and not much head room. I don't know what the current box's power consumption is like.

It does get that hot, most of the time the heatsink runs about 7c above ambient and is very quiet.

The Celeron ran hotter with the same powersupply and hard drive.

If you're interested in a small single board unit with minimal power requirements and heat generation, mini ITX might be a way to go.

It's mature technology that keeps up with new technological changes.

I had a look at the ITX info, starts to get a bit expensive, especially seeing I have a large range of bits lying around. But come the stage when 16gb CF cards significantly drop in price, those things will be absolutely brilliant for a new installation in a home environment.[[[[:)]]]]

I have re-worked the Celeron 1300a board. It works well now that v7.x has optimised cpu and memory. It doesn't get anywhere as near as hot as it did during beta testing. I put an AMD fan kit on it, I have found them to be more efficient and quieter than the Intel equivalent.
Now, I am being picky, the fan noise is considerably louder than the AMD 754 with the same number of fans. I suspect this has something to do with the age of the motherbaord, where earlier MBs only considered fans should be in one state, flat out. The AMD one was so quiet you could only really hear it if you were standing over it.

I will let it go for a while to set what happens on some of the hotter days that are coming up 36-38c days.

You are completely right about "performance per watt" and firewalls. I had my mind on servers and server clusters but typically you don't have that many firewalls running all the time to make that much of a difference. Therefore i stand corrected regarding that issue.

But i still do think that the lower heat output would increase reliability for an appliance. Plus, don't you think that the performance headroom would be nice to have? (Granted the price isn't ridiculous)

Once again, even if Astaro were to support this platform it wouldn't benefit me at all because neither myself nor my company would need it, and my customers are not in the size range that would require such a platform either.

This was more of just a "what if" question, that's all.

You know what? you bring up a point that reminded me of a question i've been wanting to ask for a while:

1. Why doesn't Astaro support the option of installing to a CF card? Logs get written once a day, no download av scanning, no web cache and no swap drive. Sure it'll use more ram, but that's not too hard to fix.

AND/OR

2. Why don't they support a possible hybrid option with the system booting (configuration, os, program files) off the CF card and using an HDD for the swap drive, logs, and cache? Also have the os and config mirrored on the HDD in case the CF fails for some reason and make sure that the system will still run if the HDD fails (but disable download AV scanning and proxy caching)?

Just a thought.

I really like to platform, but it should cost less. The c3/c7 boards aren't the problem, but you spend more on a rackmount case than on the board/cpu and ram combined! despite their size (ITX), you are very limited when it comes to 1U or SHALLOW 10 inch or less rackmount cases. hey, i would love to see a shallow 2U case but they don't exist!

the other thing is, if you want more power, non VIA itx boards are pricey, no 775 yet (to support core 2 duo). I understand their gonna cost more because its a low volume market, but i think the market would pick up more if there were more attractive options.

also it seems that most of the ITX focused stores are based in the UK and we don't have as many options in the USA

i know that the logs are written continually. i was just saying that IF astaro decided to support cf cards then they could make it so that it caches logs into ram, then writes them to the cf card once or twice a day OR when a threshold (like 5 meg) is reached, whichever comes first.

Both IPcop and Endian support cf cards in this manner. just wondering since now you can get 4gig plus cf cards for relatively cheap.

in smaller installations not needing all the features turned up this could increase reliability significantly.

Personally, I wouldn't be happy with that option... if you have a crash, you'll have almost no way of finding out what happened, as the logs won't be at all current.

I guess you could always use a syslog server.
