Can I use V6 backup on V7 yet?

Hi,

I've read that installing a new V7 and using an existing V6 backup file is not yet supported. Is this true?

If it is not yet supported, does anyone know when it will be.

....now I've just had a thought as I've been typing this... The problem for me is the time it will take to do a V6 to V7 upgrade if I have to start from scratch. I wonder if I could install V7 to a VM and do a lot of the config on it (network definitions, packet filter rules etc) and then use that backup as a basis for my real install.

What do you guys think....?

no, the migration function has not been added yet. I think it will be very difficult because of the large number of changes between v6.3xx and v7.***

Probably, rather than VMware get an old PC with at least PIII and 512mb and go from there.

I didn't realise just how different v6 was to v7. I just started to disect a v6 backup file to edit the itf.conf file and use it on V7 (before I read the above post!) I then went to look on V7 to see if the layout of the itf.conf file had changed - Its no longer there!

Another difference, where on V6 I could untar the backup file and have a look inside - V7 I cannot.

Looks like I'm doing it from scratch then. I've got one box that is only using the SMTP proxy - that will be bad enough. My other box is a HTTP proxy, gateway between internet and 3 other networks and has other crazy routes going though it - I'm really not looking forward to that.

Makes me wonder if its all worth it?

On the other hand it maybe nice to do a fresh install and document it properly!! The last 2 installs are documented, but only in my head!

I believe MySQL is used to store the config data now. According to the V7 Release notes, you can expect a version that will upgrade V6 and / or import V6 backup files towards the end of March, this year.

Fingers crossed within a month. I am looking forward to trying it to see it handles blocked and allowed web pages in proxy profiles.

It is too bad that is no longer possible in ver 7. The plain text configuration files contained in the backup archives generated by ver 6 has been a good way to document the firewall settings (other than taking browser screen captures).
