Can I use V6 backup on V7 yet?

no, the migration function has not been added yet. I think it will be very difficult because of the large number of changes between v6.3xx and v7.***

Probably, rather than VMware get an old PC with at least PIII and 512mb and go from there.

I didn't realise just how different v6 was to v7. I just started to disect a v6 backup file to edit the itf.conf file and use it on V7 (before I read the above post!) I then went to look on V7 to see if the layout of the itf.conf file had changed - Its no longer there!

Another difference, where on V6 I could untar the backup file and have a look inside - V7 I cannot.

Looks like I'm doing it from scratch then. I've got one box that is only using the SMTP proxy - that will be bad enough. My other box is a HTTP proxy, gateway between internet and 3 other networks and has other crazy routes going though it - I'm really not looking forward to that.

Makes me wonder if its all worth it?

On the other hand it maybe nice to do a fresh install and document it properly!! The last 2 installs are documented, but only in my head!

I believe MySQL is used to store the config data now.  According to the V7 Release notes, you can expect a version that will upgrade V6 and / or import V6 backup files towards the end of March, this year.

Fingers crossed within a month. I am looking forward to trying it to see it handles blocked and allowed web pages in proxy profiles.

It is too bad that is no longer possible in ver 7. The plain text configuration files contained in the backup archives generated by ver 6 has been a good way to document the firewall settings (other than taking browser screen captures).

The release of the ASG V6 backup import function has been postponed due to ongoing QA tests. This function is planned for release at the end of May in combination with the ASG V6 appliance upgrade kit.

Hi,

I known a workaround to import V6 Backupfiles to V7 (only for experienced users!).

The HowTo:
1.) Export V6 Backup file on your "old" V6 Firewall
2.) Install V7.003
3.) Configure: Lan-Access, admin user, AND SHELL Access
4.) Copy your Backupfile to the Firewall ( use folder: /home/login )
5.) Connect by SSH to your firewall (i.e.: ssh loginuser@fw-ip)
6.) Switch to root ( su )
7.) Use the following CMD: backup_converter.plx  ( needs some time... )
8.) Switch to the folder /tmp/backup_converter_
9.) Use the following CMD: backup.plx -i backup_v7.abf
10.) Wait some time ( 5 Minutes or so....)
11.) Connect to your FW by Webadmin
12.) Insert Admin Information's again ...
13.) Check the your OLD configuration (especially all thing's where you need password's/key's and so on ...)
14.) Have FUN!

I do have V.7.004.

This HowTo worked for me except step 7. Need to rename your backup file to backup.abf
