[6.300] Astaro Anti-Virus engine

Hi!

I also never heard before of "Authentium"...

I "googled" a little and don`t found much, where i can see some independently tests, which compare the engine with others.

One i found here, but "the results here are about 6 month old":

Another thing, that i am afraid of, that it seems like that they don`t release
new signatures on weekends...
Take a look at the website - they release everyday, but not on 6/24/2006-6/25/2006 and even not on 7/01/2006-7/02/2006

Does it meen, when there is spreeding some new malware on friday night, i`m possibly not secure till monday?!?

Does anyone here have some experiences with this scanner/engine?

Has anyone some "official" statement from Astaro?
Why kicked "Kaspersky" and changed to "Authentium"?

The announcements only says:
 * Added new Astaro Anti-Virus engine with better performance

But nothing about:
* Removed old Kaspersky Anti-Virus engine with less performance

Well I am not to happy about this change at all. Not alot of updates and a "noname" antivirus product. We don't know anything about there responsetime to new viruses or anything.
I would want a choice to use this "Authentium" or "Kaspersky". If kaspersky was that bad other larger firewall developers would not use it. 
 
Conclution, I want Kaspersky back. We have the opensource option for a wild card. Dont want 2 wildcards.
 
Why not choose F-Secure in that case? They are among the fastes to respond to new viruses.

Could not aggree more with Snova! Today hardwares cheep!! I dont see the preformance in the AV protection as an issue! By better hardware then!!! 
If you have that large company that needs fast scanning you should have an unlimited licence. That cost a lot then you can definitly afford a hardeware for that purpes. Othervice something is terrably wrong.

You guys have never heard of Command Antivirus? Been around a looong time, and I believe it is based on F-Prot Professional.

Do you have any personal experiance in it? Been around as both consultant and now as "normal" network administrator. In this area i have not seen it in action in a company or organisation. Mostley F-Secure Symantec mcafee and panda.
Think i have seen it on some pals home computer. But i could be mistaken.

There where for sure multiple reasons to kick Kaspersky. 

Guess they still didn't have fixed their problems with the Unix/Linux support. Pricing will be for sure another factor why they dropped them. Never had the F-Prot tested longer than a day, because I somehow didn't like it. But I'm glad they didn't take TrendMicro (worst and expensive) or some of the "Hollywood" AV's like Symantec.

And F-Secure is not really an alternative because the don't offer the gateway scan engine for Linux. At least not that I knew of any.

If Astaro does not change it back to some commercial AV engine I'm going to stop bying the E-Mail-Sucure feature.
We have a multi-layer AV structure and Kaspersky on the Astaro has not let one Virus through in 2,5 Years.
Performance really should not be an issue and before 6.300 you could choose which engine you like better!

It's not an Opensource engine, Gert wrote it is a licensed SDK. Astaro was allowed to integrate someones engine directly into their software and label it with a name created by Astaro (=Astaro AV Engine).

Opensource or not... Feels more secure to have a large and well known company like kaspersky behind the rudder then this one. And like jenZ said kaspersky has worked like a charm. 
 
Pricing is the issue? okey we who have paid money for it then? humm feels nice... [:(] 
If money was the issue then have three scanners instead. So we that want to use kaspersky can do so.
 
Update rate today 3... Normal day with kaspersky 10-15 updates. Fast and accurate updates is among the things that define a nice and good working AV product. If they updated them like 7-10 times i could live with it. 
Or did kaspersky only send out empty updates? [:P] 
 
But today what do we do when it comes a virus outbreak? Hope that it will not come any viruses until 6 hour later when the new def's arrive?
 
 
NimmdirKeks i can aggree that i don't like Symantec that mutch either. Trendmicro I have no personal excperiance in so there I will not say so mutch.
F-Secure have gateway solutions as appliances if im not misstaken so I guess its possible. Have not tried them my self so how well they work i dont know.
 
I know that Borderware uses Kaspersky for there MxTreme Mail Firewall and that product is highly ranked as one among or even perhaps the best mail gateway product. That gives some level of credit to the kaspersky system in my eyes.

...so 36 AV Signatures in 30 Days... far from Kaspersky...

You guys are making a big deal over nothing. Authentium is not as small or no-name a company as you think. 

Also most of the frequent up2dates for Kapersky were the same file over and over.. just search on here for proof.

Perheps... perhaps not... I recon we all see things differently. 
 
I tend to think that I sleep better on the night knowing that a large and well tested product as Kaspersky is on the system. Even how slow it now may be, Trust me F-Secure is slow as well but it as well as Kaspersky does the job thats what counts. 
Rather then a product I bearley knew existed. I like to try new things don't get me wrong but sometings I tend to want the sure thing on. Antivirus is one thing.
 
You can't honestly say that they are as large as Symantec, Trendmicro, F-Secure, Kaspersky or McAfee? 
 
The same file yes but was it the same contens of the file? thats the issue. To my knowlage that is how kaspersky and i think also F-Secure work. One file that the add new defs to. 
 
I think the reson that Astaro changed was there involvment with Novell. I had a look at the site and saw novells logo passing by.
So my guess is company politics.

It's alright with me when new files are only published when a new virus is found. I'll leave my Pattern Up2date at hourly so that I'll get it quite quick. Also gives us less Pattern Up2date notifications and you DO recognise there was a new pattern released :-)

Exactly! I mean, most AV vendors release weekly, or daily. Hourly is not really needed. Besides, it was most of the time the identical file being downloaded.

And actually, yes I can say they are as large. Authentium is a very large company.You don't get customers as large as some they have by being a nobody. Have you looked at the customer list? http://www.authentium.com/company/ Good enough for them, good enough for me.

I can live with daily updates, I was rather tired of the nonstop pattern update emails from the 7 different firewalls I manage.
