If not, they are BZipped TAR files. (you need bunzip/bunzip2 and tar to extract)
If they are encrypted, install ASL on a spare machine, restore the backup (assuming you remember the password), and then backup again without the encryption.
Yes they are encrypted. I dont have a problem with this I was just enquiring in case I ever do. I can think of a situation where using a spare machine wont help you ie- you didnt create the config and dont know the eth settings so do not know which is local lan port thus making it tricky to access the box yes I know you could just try each port but if you could examine the backup first it would save time. However its not a problem at present just curious
