Set up with DSL Modem and Linksys Router

I've seen the nics in the wrong order on some systems... don't worry about it too much.

Hook the modem to the external interface on your Astaro firewall.
You might need to use a crossover cable if it expects a hub, or there might be a switch on the modem.

Thank you for your reply Barry.  I think I am still doing something wrong.  I connected my (Westell) DSL Modem ethernet port to eth1 on the firewall via crossover and was not able to access the internet.

I'm not sure I have eth1 configured correctly.  How should the network be defined on eth1?  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Depends.
Does your modem use PPPoE?
If so, configure your external interface that way.

You can do something similar to what I do but it sort of depends where you wish to place your Lynksys router.

I have put my DSL modem into bridge mode in front of a Netgear router. The Netgear router does the authentication to the ISP.
Set a fixed IP on the router (in the same subnet as the ETH1 [external interface] IP address). In the ETH1 configuration, set the gateway to the IP address of the router.
You will need to set up some MASQ rules. Something like:
MASQ_Internal   Internal (Network) -> All / All   MASQ__External   None
That’s about it. 
 
Naturally it would be different if you want to place the Linksys router on the internal interface (ETH0) but you get the idea..

Thank you all for your responses.  After configuring eth1, I could no longer access Webadmin so its obviously my config.  I will reinstall the software and try again.  Would either of you offer a sample config to help get me started as I am having a little difficulty understanding the way this set up is suppposed to flow. BigO, your solution sounds fine.  What do you think is the downside to this setup?

For me there is no down side to this setup. It is what I run.    

For you, you will need to decide if you want the wireless bit on the inside or outside of your network.
If you want it on the inside, which realistically you probably do, then you should do as Barry has suggested and configure ETH1 for PPPoE. I have a separate WAP so my config will differ from what you may want to setup.

Also, Barry mentioned reading the setup doco. That would be my advice too.
It is simple to follow and I am sure you will learn more about the firewall this way.

Thank you for all your support.  I was able to get it all working once I reset the DSL Modem after connecting it to ETH1 (DOH!)

However, I have noticed that ping replies have gone from 43ms to 438ms and higher!  I am utilizing the DHCP server on the Internal interface.  Any suggestions on where to look and don't say The Manual because I checked there already [;)]

If so, you can try setting up QOS.

Nothing I wasn't using before I routed all traffic through the Firewall. [:S]  

I am running release 6.103 with ETH1 (external) configured for PPPoE, ETH0 (internal) configured with DHCP and NAT rule Internal (Network) -> All / All MASQ__External None.  This interface (internal) is connected to my Linksys Router with a statically assigned address.  Also, I am able to Surf the Internet from every Client except for the client I use to manage the Firewall and this is after I configured the proxy setting per the manual.  Here is a is a capture of the average reply time of a ping to my ISP's DNS server where I was getting on average of 32ms reply.

Ping statistics for 205.152.144.23:
    Packets: Sent = 176639, Received = 90339, Lost = 86300 (48% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 19ms, Maximum =  1499ms, Average =  214ms

Try enabling QOS on your EXT interface... 
measure your upload/download speeds, and enter them into the network-interface page.

Thanks for all your support...issue I was having turned out to be user error.  When I configured my DSL Modem for Bridged Ethernet (PPPoE configured on external of FW) I failed to disable the DHCP Server feature on the modem.  I had already enabled the DHCP Service in ASTARO.  Once I disabled the Modem's DHCP Server,  traffic flowed normally.
