Memory Creep

Your system should not be doing that. I have two ASG v6.102 systems that I look after, at home and in the office. Both are stable as far as memory consumption is concerned. Neither use any swap space.

Any ideas as to the culprit? Here is a mem usage pic. It includes a reboot I just did so I can better track the memory consumption.

Any help would be appriciated.

my home system is like yours asl 6.x but only has about 700mb of memory (on board display card). After reboot it starts at 200 or so and gradually creeps up to 350mb. Then after about a week it goes to just over 400mb and sits there quite happily until people start downloading files and then it goes up to about 600mb.
Swap space sits at between 1 and 20mb.

So check if your family is downloading large files eg linux ISOs, videos or updates to systems or new applications.

Also do you have logging enabled on all asl functions at full details. If so try reducing the logging levels unless you are trying to catch some specific detailed issue. Especailly on the http proxy.

If you go to Reporting->Advanced and click on "Process List", you should be able to figure out what's using up all the memory on your machine. Copy and paste everything there and post it here. You'll want to look for large VSZ and RSS numbers.

Hyperdyper is the major offender, having claimed that it needs about 3GB of memory. Most of that process is probably swapped out. Looks like it has a memory leak.

You might want to disable HTTP content filter (surf protection) unless you really need it.

is your system using all swap space? that should not happen.

your are right, your graph looks wierd. the continous slow growth.

for the regular mem usage an linux, most system "use" 100% memory. after all what is free mem good for if it is not used?

login to your system via ssh and use top (is it in 6.1) to see what process is using most mem. in to use shift-m to sort for memory usage.

Here is a copy of my edited process list It looks very much like yours in memory usage. How many users do you have? Do they use things like IP phones?

My system memory use goes up and down over a period depending on dowloads, but sits on average about 450mb with swap at the moment of 4.6mb.

With the spike in your memory, somebody or something downloaded a large file or you were subjected to an attack I think.

Ok I have experimented and watched.

With antivirus and surf protection turned on the memory will creep until it grinds the system to a halt. (Actually, I have been afraid to see what would happen. So, I don’t let it get that far, though it will start grinding the hdd with constant swapping.)

With it turned off it runs at 400 megs with nearly unnoticeable change just about indefinitely.

If there is an Astaro person reading this, or any suitably knowledgeable person,  I would appreciate an idea as to why this may be. 

The creeping seems to be about 50 megs a day.
