Distribution & kernel config?

Astaro is not supplied as a source code compile-it-yourself kit, so you need to use hardware that is listed on the Astaro hardware compatibility list. Even if you could change the build, and get it to run on your hardware, you would make yourself ineligible for tech support, and your system also would not be patchable.

Astaro installs just fine on any AMD Athlon or Sempron and on any Pentium 3 or 4 motherboard.

Well, how can it be based on GPL covered GNU software without having the source available? Isn't that kind of a severe license violation?

Aside from that, I was not asking for "source", only what distribution it was based on as well as the kernel configuration which astaro used for compiling their i686 kernel. If I have those two elements I'm pretty confident I can download the correct sources from *elsewhere* and recompile what is needed.

I downloaded version 5 and that worked, so I now have it up and running.
Strange choice by astero to reduce compatibility when releasing a new major version. I'd assumed build farms (continuous integration) was the norm in most all development shops nowadays, which would have meant it would have been 0 percent more effort rolling a dist with i586 compilation as well as an i686 one. (yes, testing is also automated in most places to allow for regression testing, so no extra effort there either)

First off, I'm sorry if it seems I've been flaming Astaro. I have been using it a while now and it seems to be a great solution. The only thing nagging me is the absence of the elements required by the GPL (e.g. the linux kernel is licensed under the GPL and nothing Astaro can do can change this fact and there are a some legal history records showing what has happened to other companies doing similar things and I really hope the same thing will not happen with Astaro since it would really be a loss).

Now, as for the hardware i chose, i did it because I wanted a completely silent replacement for my Cisco and Netgear routers. There is currently not a single piece of hardware based on the 8086 architecture which comes even close to the Epia pd6000e in this regard, so there really aren't any alternatives out there (believe me, I've looked). The M10000 based VIA boards require fans and are pretty bad choices for environments which can not be polluted with noise, unless a lot of custom heat-pipe modding is done (or purchasing of a very expensive Hush Technologies box, which I have some as well).

So, we're looking at a segment of users who want a dedicated hardware for firewalling and are not accepting noise. This decreases the available hardware selection down to a selected few.

If you have found other hardware which can run with passive cooling please let me know, and I'll investigate them. I've already investigated some VERY nice PPC alternatives, but getting Astaro to run on PPC would be even harder I think.

As for the comment I raised above regarding USB support, well there reallyis no point in having an optical disc in a firewall box is there? All updates are through the internet and eliminating the optical drive would save space, increase air flow and reduce energy consumption as wll (leading to yet less heat dissipation).

Upon finding a readme-file on the astaro 5.2 CD, I saw that it is indeed possible to order the sources from Astaro for Euro 30. This is great and I'll definitely do that. It also shows how Astaro is complying with the GPL in this specific instance, since they use the second stipulation of section 2 in the GPL. Thus I also hope the distribution is fairly safe from a legal stand point as well, which is a requirement if a solution is to become a stategic enterprise investment.

You are missing a very important point. Astaro supports its product via service pack updates. If you modify the software yourself in order to get it to run on unsupported hardware, you may very well find yourself in a situtation where the installation of a service pack update breaks your configuration.

If you really think there is a market (not just you) for running ASG on the particular hardware that you prefer, you ought to make your pitch to the Astaro programmers, and get them to add your hardware setup to the list of supported hardware. Then your problem will go away.

The fact remains that ASG is not intended for end user modifications beyond the configuration opportunities available in the webadmin interface. Doing anything else, leaves you out in the cold, without support.

Perhaps you should consider using SmoothWall instead.

There is absolutely a market for these "lesser" hardware varieties ... The older Via Epia eden C3 motherboards are absolutely dirt cheap.  They've run everything up to V5 without a hitch.  The idea is that you can have some serious high-availability for a few short bucks.

I too find it odd that they would up and shut us out for V6 ... now I've got to buy a new machine to replace the one that's served Astaro well for 5 years.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it ... unless the developers get tired of supporting that compilation of the kernel.

I run ASL 6 on a VIA Eden M10000, yes it has a fan, but it wouldnt be hard to put a large passive sink on it.

I run v6 and currently v7b on a amd 754 2800 with a standard AMD fan and heat sink. and a fanless powesupply. It is very quiet and you need to listen very carefully to hear it running. If you put it in a more enclosed box than what mine is, the noise level will be considerably lower again.

 Yes, it is a home environment and I have tried to reduce the fan noise to the very minimal possible. My main PC runs 6 fans under AMD "cool&quiet" control. The only time it gets noisy is when I doing alot of raw conversions or heavy printing.
I have linux box which is used as a workstation, but it way to noisy to leave on for long, I am waiting for the implementation of "cool&quiet" on it as well.

The hardware requirements for ASL have increased with each new release. It is not really a realistic expectation to be able to run the latest version of ASL (ver 6.3 or 7.0) on the same hardware that you have used to run older ASL versions on for the past five years.

Actually, I must disagree.  I think it is realistic to believe that newer versions of Astaro should run on the same hardware, and it can, by selecting one option and hitting the compile button.  We're not talking rocket science here, Linux kernels run on everything from iPods to supercomputers.  This isn't some rock wall barrier between compiling for i586 processors and i686 processors, or for that matter supporting gigabit ethernet card over another.   Sure we lose some optimizations and speed, but big whoop.  If I wanted speed, I wouldn't be running a fanless i586 processor in the first place.

If Astaro were to come out and say, gee, we're just tired of running that i586 compile script all the time so upgrade ... well, that's one thing.  But you can't tell me that ASL, one of the most stripped down installations of Linux, granted with some back-end/proprietary fanciness, won't run on i586 hardware anymore and that I shouldn't expect it to.

I run the exact same configuration (processor, memory, network cards, etc) in another box with Fedora Core 5, with full X11 window system support, Gnome 2.x, Gimp, you name it.  Sure, encoding mp3's would take for ever, if I were chose to do so, but aside from that, it's fine.

Astaro, let me be the judge if the software is running too slow for my purposes, don't simply assume that you know what's best for my situation.

The simple reality is that the newer versions of ASL require more CPU resources. Starting with version 5, Astaro integrated multiple MySQL databases into the product. This substantially increased the need for faster CPU and disk hardware.

I understand what you're trying to tell me, that there are more demands on performance as the product goes through its evolutions.

But I'm still left wanting...

a) as I said, I run lots of stuff on my little Via Epia boxes, including multiple MySQL databases (running concurrently, with a bit of traffic) ... and they do fine.

b) Astaro V5, with it's multiple MySQL databases ran fine, and wasn't even close to pegging out the resources of that machine.

c) I don't get a huge amount of traffic on my firewall box, and I don't run ASL with all the options.  And Astaro shouldn't assume that I do, thereby judging my hardware as inadequate.

d) Let me decide when my hardware is too slow.  When heavy traffic through the firewall slows it down, or when resources are getting taxed, then I'll know what the matter is.  But don't make me upgrade my firewall hardware before it's time.

What is the difference between the Epia, and the Nehemiah that is in the ASG 120 appliance? Sorry, lazy fingers don't want to google.

The Epia processor, as seen in the PD-6000, and various other "early" via motherboards improperly implements the i686 instruction set, so you have to fall back on i586 code.  Or so that's my understanding.

The nehiamiahaiahah processor, and other latter VIA processors, is capable of faster speeds, and it can run i686 code ... thus Astaro ASL V6+

grgcombs, I agree with much of what you've posted. I firmly believe that if Astaro were open with the development of the GPL'd portions of their product, they would find themselves in a situation where developers would be more than willing to help contribute to those portions of the code in order to fix bugs, add features, etc, for future releases. It should be possible to build a development environment where it's possible to build all the GPL'd code, then plug in the Astaro binaries and generate a functional Astaro ISO. 

There have been multiple cases where I believe a kernel recompile or a driver update or other change would have fixed issues I've had with various Astaro systems. In those cases Astaro has been completely unwilling to address the issues at all, so worrying about losing support isn't even an issue.

I also have long believed that while Astaro may comply with the letter of the GPL, they do not comply with the spirit of the GPL as they distribute GPL binaries via their HTTP/FTP servers, and only rarely publish GPL source isos (which you can get from here: http://download.astaro.com/gpl/). IMO, every single up2date which includes a GPL binary in it should result in a new binary iso and new GPL source iso so that it's possible to see what has changed.

I personally have not verified if the binaries generated from the ISOs match the GPLd binaries distributed in Astaro's, but perhaps I (and others) should.

PS - I believe Astaro bases their kernels off of SuSE sources.

Astaro is selling ASG devices TODAY with only 256MB of memory, 20GB and whatever CPU is shipped in those devices. Given the resource hog that v7 is based on the beta I've thrown on a 3GHz PIV w/1GB RAM, I highly doubt even hardware you buy today will run Astaro v7 acceptably even just doing packet filtering and not enabling email scanning, http scanning, intrusion detection, etc. With those hardware specs, even 512MB is cutting it tight, you really need 1GB. Astaro would do well to spend some engineering resources to reduce the memory and CPU footprint of it's software.
