IIRC, ASL 6 does not support wireless cards at all.

You'll have to use ASL 5 (With a Prism II card), or use a separate AP.

I don't think there was an official announcement as to why, but speculation on these forums was along the lines of:
WEP is too insecure.
AP's with WPA are cheap.

Think the costs are the prime reason. AP are so cheap, that is dosent make sense for astaro implementing AP features into ASL. A least in the moment.

also most vendors of wireless cards lock their code very very tightly amking it diffulcult to support in linux without tons of extra time and money.  This is much more expensive than jsut buying an AP and using a DMZ.

The cheapest way to set up a 802.11b/g access point for small office or home use on a network with an Astaro firewall, is to get a little 4-port Wi-Fi router. To take full advantage of Astaro's security features, you do not place the Wi-Fi router on the Internal network, but on a DMZ network originating from the ASL box.

You first need to prep the router. If we assume that your DMZ network is 192.168.123.0, with the DMZ interface on the ASL box having address 192.168.123.1, then you want to connect to the router first using  a laptop or PC, and go in on its webadmin page and make some changes. Turn off the built-in DHCP server, and then change the default address and LAN number in the unit so that it becomes 192.168.123.10 say. Now you can connect a straight through Ethernet cable from the ASL DMZ interface to one of the 4 LAN ports on the Wi-Fi router. The WAN port on the router won't be needed. The remaining 3 LAN ports can be used to connect other DMZ network gear. Use the DHCP server in ASL to provide IP addresses for the DMZ network.

An alternate approach is to connect the WAN port of the Wi-Fi router to the DMZ network. In this case, the Wi-Fi router is not reconfigured, but you wireless router subnet ends up with a different net number than the DMZ network, and the built-in 4-port switch on the router can not be used as an Ethernet switch for the DMZ subnet.

Do not create any rules in ASL that will allow routing from the DMZ to the Internal network. Instead, when you are on a laptop 802.11 wireless connection, you open a VPN back to ASL to get into the Internal network, same as you would do if you wished to access the Internal network from out on the Internet. This way, you are not dependant on Wi-Fi security alone to protect your wireless connections.
