Painfully Slow WebAdmin... HW or SW problem?

  Hello all. I'm testing Astaro as a possible solution for both my home and my enterprise networks. Currently though, the everything is good except the web admin is incredibly slow. Is this a hardware issue, or software?

I have the test system setup on a PII 266Mhz with 256M RAM and a 17Gig SCSI HD. There are 3 NICs and two machines plugged in.

Every click on the webadmin seems to result in many seconds of waiting, which will not work in any kind of prodcution environment.

Please advise

    These are the suggested specs as per the www.astaro.com/kb/

    Hardware Requirements  Product Version: 5.000 or later 
      
    Summary: 
    The minimum hardware requirements for Astaro Security Linux are:

    CPU: PII > 400MHz
    RAM: 128 MB (256 recommended)
    CDROM: IDE or SCSI (see HCL for supported SCSI controller)
    Harddisk: > 5GB IDE or SCSI (see HCL for supported SCSI controller)
    NIC: at least 2 PCI NICs (see HCL for support chipsets) 
    Further Information: 
    While the above hardware requirements reflect the minimum, you might want to consult our hardware calculator to find the requirements for you specific needs.  


    Now, having posted the above, please be aware that speed is "relative".  One persons slow may be another persons fast.  I have three systems I manage ( 1.44 T-Bird, 1.6 P4, 2.8 P4 ), all having at least 512 megs of RAM.  All seem to display the webabmin equally well.  I have a friend running 5.2 on an old 800 mhz, 128 meg RAM, HP system and webadmin drags on it.

    There are people here who are running ASL on their personal systems with machines like the one you mentioned.  I haven't seen, or at least can't recall, anyone running a system that far below the specs for their enterprise.  

    I am assuming that you are going to want to use the more advanved features of the ASL for your enterprise.  Well, the more bells and whistles you add the more the required specs go up.  They have a hardware " calculator" on the knowledgebase site that will give you a better idea as to what your system specs should be.

    Suggestion:  Grab a modern Intel / AMD system and install a new hard drive in it.  Install the 5.2 ASL software on that to make your test.  Then you can make your decsion based on how it will run on a modern system, not one that isn't even close to the specs.  Once you decide, pop the old hard drive back in and give the computer back to whoever you took it from.

    You can even import the configuration back into the new system you buy should you decide to go with the ASL.

    Webadmin of V5 is slower than in V4. That's because of a bunch of more options which make the webadmin bigger. Also it's related to a new internal configuration mechanism which makes it easier to implement new features and maintain existing once (that's only for development).

    Just use at least 700 MHz to get a smoothly running webadmin. 400MHz is minimum to give ASL enough power to do it's job.
