problem with ppp with serial modem

Hi - I'm trying to set up a dialup configuration via serial modem but when the modem attempts to dial I can hear the busy tone and the lppp log shows as follows:

    we can assume the line isn't actually busy. Sarcastic replies not helpful I expect.........??

    Hello gforces/blah,

    if your modem is not directly connected (means via Telephone system)
    you need to tell the modem NOT to wait for the dial tone.
    Most modems doing this by sending either ATX3 or ATX4.
    For correct value check the manual.

    well, the manual says (p.168) to place atdt before the number and not that that is the default setting.When I just put the number to dial in( minus the atdt) a connection was established.
     The busy tone I referred to was caused by following the instructions in the manual. My 'expectations' were in fact quite modest: accurate information in the documentation, and of course courteous replies or none at all.
