second HD

To my knowledge only 1 HD is addressed during installation, unfortunately the installation can not be customized.  One of the other posters may know different.

Have you tried raising a support form from the main Astaro site?

This would be nice.

I imagine you could load the diskpart utility, but it should handle it out of the gate. Multiple disks, better performance. Maybe Astaro can discuss a 'gotcha' of doing it...

You are better off using a single, larger capacity hard drive. The firewall machine consumes less electricity that way.

Also keep in mind that firewall software is commonly run on small form factor PCs that only have room for a single hard drive inside the case.

Even in a small 1U rack casing, like the one I use, is place for 4 disks. If HD space and/or speed is an issue (and not electricity) using multiple HD's would be an improvement. 
During installation, during Hardware detection, it even mentions "Harddisk(s)", so why not use them.

the amount of power drawn by a hardrive is miniscule. Hard disks draw less than 15Watts on average.  Modern cpus are the biggest draw in a server computer by at least a factor of two(more in the athlon xp/p-4 world)

i am not a home user, so i dont realy care about power consumption.
but i will tell that our user when they complain about proxy performance: hey we save the environment  [;)]

But that extra 15 W for a second small hard drive, instead of using a single, larger hard drive that can hold everything, does amount to an additional 131.5 KW hours per year. Assuming a cost of electricity of $0.30 per KW hr, that comes to around $40 per year. At that price, assuming a three year lifespan for the installed equipment, a single, larger hard drive pays for itself, which was my point.

Keep in mind that we only need a drive in the 6 to 20 GB range to run ASL. The people that wish to split the installation onto several drives, are the home users that are trying to reuse their old 2.5 and 4 GB drives. My argument is that it is simply not worth it for them to try to do so.

The much higher power consumption by the CPU doesn't enter into it, since the machine will need a CPU in either case.

Wow, Canada's electrical services are expensive!  Here in Texas, our KW Hour rates are around $0.15-$0.19 depending on your provider.

With one Canadian dollar being worth USD $0.718856 today (according to Yahoo), your USD $0.19 per KW hr becomes CDN $0.26. That's not that far off the $0.30 that I used in my calculation.

I suspect the European readers pay considerably more for their electricity.

its about the same here in germany. on the last bill it was ~0.15€/kwh, if i remember correctly.

[/ QUOTE ]Calgary, and all of Alberta, is on the western North American power grid, thus the 120/240 V, 60 Hz power we get here is connected and phase coherent with British Columbia, the Yukon, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colerado, Nevada, Montana and west Texas.
