Harddisk for V5

Mike_H is giving you good advice. Stick with ASL v4 on your current hardware setup. That machine is never going to run ASL v5 to your satisfaction, even if you did put a larger hard drive in it.

You will need a much faster CPU, much more RAM and a bigger hard drive to get ASL v5 up and running, which means you will have to commit a different, more powerfull machine to run your firewall software on. Your current P2-233 MHz machine is only worth around $35 these days, so it is basically a throwaway.

don`t know how your car looks like - but what would you think if someone at the gas station tells you:  our petrol doesn`t work with your car. go - buy a new one - your car is basically a trowaway !

Why the outragous negative postings?  2 posts in as many minutes.  The above poster is using a Cyrix MII 233.  Have you had one of these??  I have, they were fine in their day, but anyone that had one knows the level 1 and 2 cache limited the cpus performance.  Too be honest I think $35 is too much.  

VelvetFrog and myself were only saying that if he decided to stick with the hardware he has, to avoid potential issues with speed and resource handeling he may want to stay on V4.

In the computer industry, the products they sell today provide double the bang for the buck compared to what they were selling 18 months ago. This is a relentless trend that has been operational for more than 30 years, and will continue unabated for at least another 30 years.

My advice is: Don't get emotionally attached to old computer hardware. Corporations write their equipment off over 3 years and replace it with new stuff. For home users, 5 years is really the maximum length of time that you ought to hang on to the old computer gear. Practically speaking, all the old machines containing motherboards with front side bus speeds in the 25 MHz to 66 MHz range are junk today.

I still keep a couple of P1-233 MHz Toshiba laptops and a P2-333 MHz PC around, but I wouldn't want to get any more equipment of that vintage. All of the 8086, 286, 386, 486 and P1-133 PC equipment is now just junk. Slow and reliable doesn't cut it.
