Try the Search next time.

That appears to happen because of BIOS settings (using APM, etc.). Making your settings more conservative should remedy the problem...

Well, that worked for somebody else, and you didn't mention that you had tried that.

Any other settings we can make conservative? Sound? Plug and Play?

At the end of the day, one of your hardware components might need a Linux driver that ASL doesn't have preloaded on the install CD. With name brand hardware, that circumstance is becoming less frequent, but it still happens from time to time...
    

Thanks for the hints, I'll continue to dig around. 

By the way; the LI is probably "LILO" getting tuncated; the machine is locking up when the drivers are coming online...
  

Try to download the new ASL iso and install it. See if your problem go away. Here is the link to the new iso of ASL.

the "LI" on the screen means that the stage 2 of LILO did not load. You can boot a live cd (gentoo maybe) and check the lilo configuration (make sure you mount and chroot to your ASL system).
also search google for possible stage 2 failures in LILO (and your config)

P.S. reinstalling the LILO to MBR might be a good ideaa too.
