Minimum hardware requirements

I have a test box running ASL4 on PII 300, 128 mb ram, 4.5 GB.
This box has no problem passing 12 Mbits/s and an average of about 160 IP connections. Average CPU load is about 60 percent.  Squid enabled and  running High Availabilty.

Recently I  had two Pentium 120 boxes, 64 mb ram (i believe) with ASL 3.2. I remember trying to install failed using a 2 GB disk. These boxes were terrible slow using WebAdmin.

You have two firewalls, if you in example are using VPN tunneling between them, it require more resources than a "DSL-'dummy'-fw", depending on encryption and bandwidth.

I have seen a "Performance" document for ASL 3 once. If you find this (probably at docs.astaro.org), you will probably get an idea of what required for "your site".

I can certainly testify to slow Webmin on the low-pentium boxes.  I've got it running on a P200 protecting only 9 IPs, PPPoE and SurfWatch and while it handles the throughput of the basic DSL connection (up to 1.5MBPS) without a hitch, Webmin is glacial.  Even more problematic is that every time I do an Up-2-Date it takes at least 10 minutes for the thing to settle down, and in the interim Webmin is often disabled; at the end I often have to do some manual pings from root just to re-awaken the PPPoE connection.  Also SurfWatch goes down on a fairly regular basis and has to restart.

All this on ASL 3.2. . .I'm not even gonna try 4.0 on that box.  My other one is a PII-300 with 128MB and 2GB; I'm thinking I may just increase HDD capacity and try that one as-is.  It's handling about 40 IPs on a T-1 so it'll work a little harder, tho average CPU util. on 3.216 is about 15% so I'm not anticipating many issues.  

How do you have v4 running on a PPro-200? I thought v4 didn't support 586/K6 processors.
Am I off base with the PPro / 586 association? If not, I've got a couple of PPros that I've been looking for something to do with.

I thought the issue was with Pentium I processors which the P Pro doesnt quite fall into.

Works/Installs fine on my P Pro 200 boxes. 

A PPro is aka a 686. It is identical to a PII except it does not have MMX. And I think it has more cache than most PII's.

As far as Linux and GCC are concerned, it will run all code compiled for 686.

Also the core code for the PPro was designed more for multiprocessor, as well as the fact that the cache on the PPro ran as fast as the processor, where as the PII's the cache ran at half of the speed of the processor.  

I am running Ppro-200 with 128 under 3.216 with a 2 gig drive I would like to know before I make any switch to V4 has anyone else run it with a 2 gig drive ? I di not want to give it a 4+ gig drive and have it sitting empty when a 2 will do just fine..... any imput on this is appreciated.

It works.  I just installed a test ASL 4.002 system on a P-II 350 MHz, 128MB, with 2GB hdd.  With this size of drive, booting takes a lot longer than it does with larger drives, but resources look good.

It looks as though the main cost to doing it this way is in space for your proxy swap and your logfiles, but if you're mainly using it for packet filtering and VPN (as I am) that shouldn't be too big of an issue, I'd think.

In any case, it definitely boots & runs.

How can I setup asl 4.008 on a 4Gb hd if it stops installing when it check that the hd is smaller than 8 gb? Thanx  

I have an ASL 4.008 ISO fresh install running on a Maxtor 90650U2 6.8 gb hard drive in an Intel MU440EX/Celeron 366 system.  Check that your CD drive is OK if that's how you are installing ASL.  I kept getting "drive error" hangs while trying to install the ASL 4.106B ISO (or was it 4.107B?) on my TX97/K6-2 system, & jumped to the conclusion that ASL didn't like the hard drive, but it turned out to be the CD drive.  When I cleaned the CD drive using my trusty old Radio Shack CD-ROM Lens Cleaner, the error went away.

I'm trying to install 4.008 ISO on 4 Gb hd.
My CD drive is Ok. Infact it dosn't hang with 'drive error'; it simply stops the installation as the minimum hw requirements are not met. How did you install it on 6.8 gb? Didn't asl tell you that your hd is too small? Thanx  

Re. installing 4.008 on a 6.8 gb HD.   No messages about the drive being too small.  In fact, there were no messages other than those I got when I installed 4.008 on an 8.4 gb HD in my backup ASL system.

Rioght now I don't have any hard drives smaller than 6.8 gb, or I would try installing 4.008 on a smaller one & let you know how it works out.  

As the thread indicates, ASL 4.002 appears to have been installed on 4.5 & 2 mb hard drives.  Maybe someone who has a 4.5 mb or smaller HD can try installing ASL 4.008 on it & let us know if 4.008 will install on smaller drives.

Hi all!

For HDD it is  neccessary to have at least 1.7 GB disk space. Less is not working. I tried in test enviroment and istalled ASL 4.006 and then updated it to latest version without any problem.

I had 1.8 GB HDD, 48MB RAM and PII processor.

I'm trying to install asl 4.008 on 4Gb Scsi HD but installation fails. "Installation failed. Remove CD and reboot system".
In the install.log file it says: Trying to mount /dev/ on /install...Phase end: hw_conf.
It recognize my hd (needed :1,7 Gb, having 4,3Gb...Partition all ok).
What's wrong?
P6 200 with 128Mb RAM. tryed asl 4.001 - 4.008 all version!

My 2 GB box is in a production environment so I really can't afford to take my branch offline to do a test install; however, why don't you try downloading the 4.000 which is still on the website, installing from that, and running Up2Date to take it to 4.008?  I can confirm that this works 'cause that's what I did on a machine that's been running in production for several months.
