Best hardware for ASL?

I really recommend using 3COM NICs

I've had a lot of joy with Intel Pro 100-S cards.
Also compex (DEC Tulip) chipset.

CPU I would recommend at least 600MHz for a decent box. 256MB RAM.

I had no problem with my Shuttle Barebone FV24 System,
it is very small, 27 x 19 x 17cm and economic to operate (150 Watt Power Supply)
I use a PIII 733MHz with 256MB RAM and 40GB HD.
The system has an integreatet NIC (Realtek 8139C chipset)
I've added a D-LINK DFE-580TX NIC with 4xLAN (DEC Tulip chipset), so it has 5 LAN's:
- Extranet
- Intranet
- Public-DMZ WWW & FTP
- Private-DMZ only MAIL over Proxy
- Wireless-LAN

Caution: With CPU's under 600MHz and SAL 3.x - it never worked for me.

I'm using a homebrew PC--Intel440BX motherboard, Pentium-II-350 CPU, WD IDE 10GB HDD, Toshiba RAM (128MB), Netgear FA310TX NICs in a 2-u rackmount case.  If forget what the graphics adaptor is but I think it's an old Trident or else a Tseng ET4000 chipset on a generic card.

Even tho this is the low end of Astaro's specs, it works like a charm for Roadwarrior VPN and firewall to 25 users on a T-1 and can handle the max 1.5 MB throughput of the T-1 without breaking a sweat...usually no more than 25% CPU peaks and average below 10%.

I should have added in my last post that I'm using an old HP Vectra Pentium-200 with 64MB RAM in another installation. . .this one for a 9-user network in a nonprofit homework center.  It's connected to a PPPoE DSL connection and is running SurfProtection as well as basic firewall.  The 200 MHz is definitely a little slow for this application, but on day-to-day usage it sustains throughput just fine.  The only time I really regret the slower speed is on installing of Up-2-Dates, where I find that even after the installation window reports "Done" it can be as long as 5-10 minutes before the firewall settles down and passes traffic properly again.

That aside, in a basic homestyle application, a P-200 actually handles the job pretty well.
