Sophos GS-205 vs UTM Software

Hello..

Performance and stability point of view, someone can tell me what should be the correct choice?

Currently I have a descent Firewall but slow when it do live monitoring on the network (like troubleshoot something to work on the network), VoIP is working now but with some workaround.  I can add DELL name is on their web site but I do not want to offence Dell fan [8-)]

Anyway.. I was looking for SG-205 and I just installed their software on a VM to see a bit the interface.

    Hi Frank,

    Did you mean the Sophos SG-210 firewall appliance? If so, there's no difference between the software running on a SG series appliance and a software install of the UTM software. The only real difference is in licensing. Software Installs are licensed by protected IP count (you supply your own hardware) whereas appliances are licensed by model.

    No, my mistake.  Should be Sophos SG-105.

    If I'm correct, I can take a box that fit in my telecom room with 4 network card and install UTM software and I will get about the same compared to their SG-105 but license cost.

    Because it is for Home use, I got a full licensed version (AV, Apps Protection, etc.) compared to the box where I have to pay for their package each 3 years (depending of the package)..

    However this will be ugly compared to the SG-105 and since the hardware is different, it could be slower of faster..

    Installed directly to the host on a SSD drive vs HyperV on a Microsoft Windows Server with HDD for example.

    My understanding is correct ?

    It's not clear to me whether this is for a business application or strictly for home use.  If for business, you should engage with a reseller.

    Yes, it is for my home.  However, I work as a consultant in IT area.  Like a lot of people how work in this sector, I have a lot of thing less common in the average house and a network less simple than usual just because I know a bit what I do.

    I was thinking to change a SonicWALL for a Sophos, that all.  And I found the software version of it so I was taking a bit of information on it...

    I saw the traffic monitoring; better than SonicWALL but a lot less easier to troubleshoot than a WatchGuard.  I still look the interface and I would probably take the hardware without licensing... like my SonicWALL.  Too expensive for my house but less bulky than a PC on the side of my switch and wood panel ...

    For home use you get the UTM software for free

    Its limited to 50 IPs

    Just need a box to run it on. Depending on internet speed and features you need to run will determine how much power you need but even a modest i3 box off eBay will do most home/lab setups. 

    When adding NICs use Intel based models as they perform much better than the Realtek cheap and cheerful units
