WAN link "crashing"... State: UP Link: Error

Sophos UTM Home running on licensed ESXi 6.0

Hi guys,
I am experiencing a strange issue where the WAN link just stops working. When I log into the admin console I see State: UP Link: Error

I have 3 virtual Ethernet connections:  LAN, WAN, WAN Backup
LAN maps to a physical port going to my LAN switch
WAN and WAN Backup map to a single physical port going to my cable modem.
I added WAN Backup and Uplink Balancing to tackle the issue and it worked for a while. WAN would crash and fail over to WAN Backup (same physical port) and the connection would continue to work.
Lately however WAN and WAN Backup will have the same issue State: UP Link: Error

The cable modem has 4 ports and a solid connection. I have a wireless router connected directly to the cable modem for guest wifi access and it does not lose connection. I connect to this to verify the modem is still working when the internet stops working for the LAN.

There are never issues with the LAN connection and I never have any problems logging into UTM when the connection is down or any other time.
I have tried swapping out all cables involved with no difference

Any ideas how to troubleshoot this further or what logs to look at?

    We have had this happen to devices connected to a cable modem too. However, in our case these were hardware connections to a cable modem. Link errors were always related to issues on the ISP end. I'm sure someone may be able to shed a bit more light into how the UTM detects Link errors and what they generally mean. 

    Curious - Is the modem you mentioned in bridged mode?

    If your isp is comcast and the modem is smc that's your issue.  If you are not running a static ip save yourself some money..return the craptacular smc and get your own motorola sb6121.

    Im not in the US so its not Comcast. My ISP is UPC and the modem is a Technicolor TC7200. The modem is in bridge mode and as I mentioned I have a wireless AP also connected to one of the modems ports. So both the wireless AP and the UTM get a public IP. The IP is fixed also persisting after reboots. When the WAN link on the UTM dies I connect to the wireless AP and find the connection is fine. The WAN link never seems to recover either. I have to turn it off and back on in the Interfaces section. Then it comes back online.

    If there someway other than what I mentioned above with uplink monitoring to force the connection to recover it would help somewhat if there is no other solution

    what kind of nic are you using inside the utm mahcine?

    Its using a virtual VMXNET3 nic for all connections which is the recommended one as far as I know...

    I didn't try that but mostly because my downstream connection is 240Mb so fixing it at 100Mb would not be a solution even if it helped. I will try it for testing purposes though and see if there is any difference. Thanks
