Bandwidth Problems

This is our first Sophos device. It is a brand new SG210. Everything went smooth in regards to setup. Our ISP bandwidth is 75down/75up and I am getting these numbers when I configure a laptop to connect directly to ISP.

With the Sophos in place we are averaging 20down/71up.

We only have the "basic" + "network protection" licensed. QOS is completely disabled and no device on network is hogging bandwidth in the reports that I can see. We only have 10 users total and around 25 devices right now.

We have Eth0 set for LAN with Auto Negotiate. 

We have Eth1 set for WAN which is disabled auto with setting at 100baseT/Full Duplex. We have played around with the settings  for Eth1 while we were on the phone with ISP support. They are showing no errors on their end so it must be something with the Sophos specifically.

We have used speedtest.net, speedof.me, and the Logix speedtest on their site. We have also tried to do a download directly instead of relying on the speedtest and are only getting 23Kbps average.

Any ideas?

    What specific feature sets do you have enabled?  Do you see high CPU and/or Memory usage?

    First thing to look at is IPS.  This can introduce a great deal of latency if untuned.  Do you have all Attack Pattern rule-sets enabled?  On the Advanced Tab, have you added your applicable servers to the Performance Tuning section?  Finally for IPS, you may need to tune the Anti-DoS/Flooding Thresholds to your environment.

    Direct download of a large file, from a well known high bandwidth source, is usually a better way of gauging speed than web based speed tests.

    From the UTM shell, you can try downloading a file using wget to see what speed you get from the perimeter.

    You have some kind of configuration or hardware problem.  Get your reseller and support involved.

    Only feature enabled is network protection. I tried turning off DDOS with no change.

    CPU utilization is almost always around 2% and the peak has been 35%. RAM usage is at 7%. The RAM peak has been 9.28%

    Performance tuning has been set for our primary server under the advanced tab with no change in results either.

    Probably a Speed/Duplex or MTU issue.

    Yep... so just for future reference. We already had the Eth1 (WAN Side) set with auto negotiate off and set to 100BaseT/Full. 

    Eth0 is our internal network and it was set to still auto negotiate. I changed Eth0 to match Eth1, so auto negotiate was turned off and speed set to 100BaseT/Full.

    This brought our download speeds to just over 50Mbps down (again we are supposed to be 75) but way better than the 12 down we were getting.

    If I plug my single system alone into the firewall with these settings I actually am getting 75/75 like we should be... so issue now isn't firewall and we can live with 50Mbps. Probably due to some of the older systems we still have here on the network or even some old cabling somewhere.

    nods now you can start tightening up the security as well.  Unless your user count goes waaay up or you have a misconfiguration you should have no issue doing 75/75 or within about 10% of that with QOS on.
