Kernel Panic - Dell PowerEdge R220

Hi Guys/Girls,

Our server came today, went to install Sophos 9.2 with the ISO image asg-9.206-35.1.iso 

I get to the Black screen with the red writing to where I press ENTER to start installation and it then comes up "Kernel Panic - not syncing: attempting to kill init!"

The server is a PowerEdge R220 with Intel Xeon 3.4GHz Quad-C, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 500GB SATA 7.2k HDD and an extra Broadcom 5719 NIC (4 Port) as well as the onboard NICs.

Brand new server arrived yesterday from Dell UK factory.

    Because of how UTM works..it has a restricted driver set.  UTM only officially provides support for it's hardware and VM's(vmware, hyper-v and xen are the officially supported ones IIRC).  If you want to use your own hardware older hardware works best due to the restricted driver set.  The less code the less vulnerabilities.

    Just because it's new doesn't mean it's "good." ... Have you tested the hardware with diag tools, other OS installs, etc. to rule out the UTM OS as the issue?  NEW stands for Never Ever Worked ... have had plenty of new hardware just bad off the shelf.  Not saying your server is bad, but I'd make sure it isn't before pointing the finger at the Sophos OS.

    FWIW, one of my buddies (a very experienced HP Field technician, he dates back to the days of DEC -> Compaq -> HP) has seen a significant uptick in bad "new" Intel processors lately ... we were discussing this the other afternoon.

    Also thought I'd mention:  If an alternate OS works OK, no crashes (say, Ubuntu, Windows, etc.), and you have support (Standard or Premium), you should start a case with Sophos Support directly -- they can help.  While posting here will elicit some responses from other users (or resellers) with some experience, it's not a place that Sophos uses to create support cases from -- although they do have some staff that monitor it from time to time.

    could be cpu, ram, cables, hdd firmware, most likely the bios or lifecycle or any number of things.  I like Bruce's NEW acronym.  New hardware isn't necessarily good as Bruce said.

    Hi to all,

    I use FFTH connection, bandwidth are 400 Mb/s in download, 100 Mb/s in upload.

    I would be to purchase a Dell R220 with Xeon CPU E3-1200 v3 and 8 Gb of RAM.

    I would like to this hardware to install Sophos UTM on it...
    Don't want to use Sophos UTM in VM, but i prefer to launch it directly with build it OS to have a true Sophos UTM device.
    Sorry but i dunno how you call the true Sophos UTM (OS built-in with Sophos) and the VM version (Windows OS + VMware + Sophos)

    Do you know if this hardware is compliant ?
    Does this hardware is enough to use Sophos with all option (firewall/filtering) ?
