backup restore

HEllo all,

I'm facing a little problem with my astaro security gateway 8 that i stopped using for 1 year. now i need to turn it on again as my new home setup is ok. 

problem : 1 interface (internal) looks down.... can't access it ... and looks like my admin password for command line is not working also .... and i can't access grubb menu by pressing ESC !!!! a total mess !!! 

so i have a Good backup file here with me and i would like to use it but as it is a security gateway 8 can i use it on a fresh UTM 9 install ?

    ok i found how to ... but each time i restore my backup the internal interface is not responding anymore ..... did you already see that ? i tried with several backup files and same problem.... is there a way to only recover the firewall setup ?

    You should be able to use an 8.312 to restore to V9.  Probably, you can use older backups, but that will be less reliable.  I would install ftp://ftp.astaro.com/UTM/v9/software_appliance/iso/asg-9.111-7.1.iso instead of one of the 9.2 ISOs and then Up2Date from there.  If you have a really old backup, you might want to install 8.311, restore to that, Up2Date to 8.313 and make a new backup before installing V9.111 and restoring to it.

    Sometime, in a new version, the order of the interfaces can change, so try both to see which is Internal.

    Hello Bob,

    ok so after double checking my versions ... my OLD UTM was a version 9. i tried with diferent versions of backup even some old with version 9.004034 of the OS. 

    Each time same problem: when i boot no matter which interface i plug on the switch as internal it is not working .... and even more weird one of the interface looks down to me as the switch light is not blinking.

    i tried to reinstall but changing the Internal interface ... just in case. after the initial setup i uploaded my backup file in the UTM webpage. after uploading i  click finish ... then i can see the HDD blinking but webpage freeze.... 

    i got command line access and when i run ifconfig it gives me the good IP address i remember in my setup: 192.168.5.254 problem i can't access it in webadmin.

    what should i do in command line to see what's going on ?

    Your description in the last post above this one is consistent with the problem I described in my first post - I think eth0 and eth1 were reversed by the restore.  Any luck with switching the NIC your WebAdmin PC connects to?

    PS I assume you're restoring to 9.111, not 9.205.

    I Tried with both NICs of the firewall and it is not working ... 
    when connecting both interfaces to the switch, one is blinking the other one is not.

    is there a way to check interfaces status ? or to de-activate / re-activate an interface ?

    lucky me i left a spare UTM in the office ... and by chance i left all the setup in it ! so i just need to grab this setup or i can just bring back the machine at home. 

    i feel really better ! anyway Thanks for the help Bob

    Could it be the interface is configured as a VLAN interface and the switch you're connnecting it to now is not configured likewise?
    I do think that when this is the case the switch LED should blink however....
