lost password reset issue

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but here goes...

A number of months ago I built the software appliance with v9.1 and was playing around with it. After letting it sit since then I now want to use it but I did not write down any of the passwords, so I tried the procedure in this article..
 
Recover access to your Sophos UTM in the event of password loss

It seems to work (no errors) in that it says the password has been changed for loginuser and root, but after rebooting (step 16) it says 'login incorrect' when I use the new passwords for loginuser or root. According to the tech note this procedure is supposed to work for v9 - did something change in v9.1 in this regard?

    Hi,~ageek, and welcome to the User BB! [;)]

    Those are the passwords to reach the command line, not to access WebAdmin.  If you can access the command line, try:

    cc passwd newadminpassword


    Any luck?

    Thanks, but if the procedure that I linked to would have worked to change the loginuser and root passwords I would have already done that.

    That procedure should have worked.  It's pretty tricky though, and you must follow the details to a gnat's eyelash.

    I followed it to the letter. I'm not a 'nix noob. I used the same sort of Grub related procedure recently to recover a Opensuse Linux machine for which no one knew the password. In the ASG case it looks like it is writing to the /etc/passwd file (no errors returned) but something else (ASG?) is restoring that file when it reboots.

    Anyways, if no one know of a bug/issue with this procedure on ASG 9.1 I'll just wipe it out and reinstall it.

    Ok, to test my theory I followed the procedure, with one difference; on step 15 instead of using Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot I typed 'login' and was able to login as loginuser and do su and logon as root. At that point, I did CC, RAW and system_password_reset and then I rebooted using Ctrl-Alt-Del. After it had gotten back to the login prompt, I logged in as loginuser and root again, so I figured it was all good. I then powered it down, reconnected the network cables and powered it up, and when I tried to login as root or loginuser, I again get 'login incorrect' but it did reset the webadmin password and I was able to get into that after entering a password.

    Strange behavior, but now that I can get into it I should be able to reset the root and loginuser passwords from there and presumably they will stick... I have to run at the moment, but I'll try that later on.
