Why are the INTEL NICs considered the best? And would this one suffice?

The motherboard build in NICs that I am looking at are the chepo Marvell chipset.
So I am thinking of purchasing a PCI-E NIC...however if I purchase this NIC will one 1 NIC suffice since it's dual port or Do I have to  purchase two separate NICS?

    Hi, the Avoton boards (and some others probably) have Intel NICs with a Marvell PHY. Those are typically still excellent.

    Which board are you looking at?

    I'm not recommending Avoton for your 150mbps connection, btw.

    Intel are considered among the best (I like Broadcom also) as they:
    a. are reliable
    b. have few driver issues (and Intel contributes open Linux drivers to the Linux kernel (Broadcom does not))
    c. have strong acceleration (CPU offloading) capabilities (critical for high performance)
    d. have VLAN support

    Common cheap NICs such as Realtek commonly do not meet the above criteria, esp. #b & c.
