Odd network issue.

The primary WAN interface on one of our systems, I have assigned an additional public IP to.

Works fine for a while, then stops being pingable/functioning.

If I disable then enable the public IP, it works for a while again and then stops.

If I keep pinging it continuously, it stays "up", but if I stop, it goes down after a while.

Any ideas??

Hi Simon,
sounds like a power setting, which doesn't make sense as I believe all your boxes are Sophos hardware UTMs.

I remember a problem in V7 where Additional Addresses became inactive when the interface was toggled off/on, and they then had to be toggled to work again. Is there any indication that there might be a problem with your NIC or with the ISP or modem? Anything related in the System Messages log?

Nothing in logs looks odd. I'm thinking possibly that the ISP has assigned the IP to two people? (ie ARP goes stale and I lose the link? Refreshing the link by toggling refreshes ARP on the hardware making it work again?) (Or if I ping to keep it alive, it keeps the link alive).

It's not power or NIC as this is an additional IP and all other IPs on that NIC work fine.

Yes it's Sophos UTM hardware.

Maybe the ISP's router is losing its marbles. What happens if you get them to bounce it?

I would start with the connected modem. I'm sure you have checked it out and swapped it over. But there are a lot of dodgy ones out their. I would start at the beginning again and make sure the connection is stable, like check MTU size, etc. Put Wireshark across the link to see if you can capture it.
Tell us what you find, it would be interesting to see the result.

No modem attached. Its a NIC on the UTM direct connected to ethernet from the ISP.
All IP's are on the same cable, so not much I can change. (And all working).

In any case, we've changed the IP address and it appears OK now.
